“What brings you to Driftwood Cove?”

Alec’s face goes cold for a moment, barely noticeable if I hadn’t been looking directly at him. “I’m a nomad of sorts. Been traveling for a few years. Finally made it back to the coast.” It’s vague, and I narrow my eyes.

“Nomad? Meaning you’ve been wandering around the wilderness for years with no money or job?”

Alec laughs, “Hah, no. More like a lone wolf, traveling the world searching for a new life.” His eyes catch mine, searching for something. “A new family.”

“Because it’s the summer, Leena. It generally tends to be hotter in the summer months; though, I’m no meteorologist so I can’t say for sure.” Alec grins in my direction a few paces behind him.


“How can you still be such a wise ass in this heat?” I complain, whiny and annoyed even to my own ears. 


I’m used to air-conditioned bedrooms and a floral shop that needs to be cool at all times for the flowers and plants. Walking around in the heat that literally ripples off the blacktop is testing both my patience and endurance. Of which I have none. 


“Easy, with practice.” He flashes me a smile, eyes closed and teeth bared. It’s charming, and I’d appreciate it more if I weren’t literally dripping sweat. 


“Does this heat really not affect you?” I try, taking a few longer strides to put myself next to him, “Is that a wolf thing or a you thing?”
