Early morning light blinds me through the open curtains, and I have a distinct, overwhelming desire to be zipped inside a tent away from the sun. But when Leena curls up against my side, sleep-warm and barely awake, I feel like everything else doesn’t matter as much. Only her.
“Mmm, bacon,” are Leena’s first, slurred words of the morning, eyes just peeking open and her mouth pulled in a tight line with her hair a tangled bird's nest; I feel myself falling for her all over again.
I don’t want to pull her abruptly from this half-sleep, but I can hear footsteps coming down the long hall, and I want her to be able to throw some clothes on if she feels the need to, so I give her a gentle nudge under the covers, calling her name softly.
“Leena? Someone is coming down the hall.”
One of her eyes opens fully, and she hunkers down into the covers a little tighter, curling into my chest, “Who?”
