Chapter 37: An Omen

-LEENA-

Alec, as usual in the colder weather, is up before sunrise, out in the woods running before I’m even opening my eyes. But he’s always back before I’m fully up, and the fact that I’ve been awake for over an hour and there’s no sign of Alec has me worried. Victor is still out there, and Alec still limps on his bad leg when the weather is bad. It worries me because I should be out there with him, making sure he’s alright, not worrying about a smoldering fire, hoping he shows up.

He does, after long minutes of waiting, with a complex look on his face. One I haven’t seen in the almost five months we’ve been traveling together.

“Alec?”

I go to him, meeting him halfway to our makeshift camp, and he pulls me into a jarring embrace like it’s the last he’ll ever give me. I know something is wrong.

“Alec, what’s wrong?”
