Chapter 30: Calling Home

The buzzing of my phone on the nightstand wakes me up far too early. I groan and roll over. My phone reads 5:45 am.

“Hello?” I grumble into the phone. I checked the time but I completely forgot to see who was calling me.

“Mandy?” Jackie’s voice comes through the phone. “You there? Can you hear me?”

“Jackie? Hey, yeah I can hear you,” I sit up in bed and my phone beeps at me with the disconnected dial tone.

I look at my phone and see I have zero service. I sigh and get up, out of bed. I walk around my room trying to find more bars. I walk over to my room’s balcony doors, and the signal starts to grow. I step out onto the balcony and shiver in the cold night air. I grab a blanket off the chair by the door and wrap myself up before going further onto the balcony. I hold my phone up and it starts to gain more bars. I sit on the bench on the balcony and try to redial Jackie.

“Mandy? I lost you,” Jackie says when she picks up on the first ring.
