Chapter 33

They are leaving at noon.

Evelyn had managed to pack most of her stuff. Not that there was much to pack in the first place. For instance, she hadn’t even unpacked half of her bag when she arrived. Call it insecurity—or maybe it was just her way of keeping one foot out the door, never fully letting herself believe she could stay.

She hadn’t slept properly last night. Instead of seeking comfort in her Dad's arms like she’d thought she might, she stayed in her room, tossing and turning restlessly. Her mind wouldn’t stop racing, circling the endless “what ifs” that came with the upcoming mafia ball and its disaster.

She doesn’t want to leave.

But she has to leave.

This newfound family of hers—they didn’t deserve the danger she carried with her. And she couldn’t risk their lives just because her heart ached to stay.
