The dead and the sounds they make—you can't escape them. Snow led them to us; the parking garage only had so many exits. I think we all knew we weren't all making it out of there alive. We were malnourished, our bodies were weak, we couldn't fight, and I don't even know if we wanted to. Staying alive required so much effort; it would have just been easier to let the dead rip us apart, but something about the way they look at you makes you stop believing that. Their cold, dead eyes give you that boost of adrenaline to keep trying.
When they finally slowly made their way towards us, most of the others ran. Some tried to fight, but they killed one or two before they realized it wasn't worth the effort. Riley watched as her chosen father didn't move. Skylar pulled her by the arm as she cried, watching the monsters destroy his body. He didn't scream.
"Maverick, we have to go."
"You go, Val, I got this!"
"I'm not just gonna let you stay here."
"Valentine, now!" Arwen yelled from behind.
"You can't kill them all; it isn't worth it; they're just gonna kill you."
"You don't have to die too; just go, Val." I picked up the shovel from earlier and used it to knock a few of them away from me and off to the side instead.
"I killed Cole!" The way he looked at me made me stop, and the cold, sharp pain sent a shiver down my body, but I wasn't aware of what the pain was yet. He dropped his weapon and grabbed me by the arm. His grip was tight, and it hurt. I wanted him to stop. "Please, let go of me," I pleaded, my voice trembling. The fear in his eyes was mirrored in my own as I realized the gravity of what I had just confessed.
I didn't know where the others were. I figured it didn't really matter because I knew I was never going to see them again. Maverick was going to kill me, but it was okay because I knew I would deserve every minute of it.
