Lina felt the slow thud of anxiety in her chest grow stronger as Pete drove closer to the house. She covered the last bit of the chicken as she could no longer stomach it.
Pete pulled over to the curb, but he left the engine running. They both said nothing. Looking at the window, he silently observed the lawn and then the porch. Not entirely sure what he was looking for, but it seemed like a long time since he was last visited.
Looking back to her, he asked, "Where's Serena?"
"With Elise."
His brows furrowed. He was certain he had heard that name before. "And who's Elise?"
"My neighbor. She lives right over there." Lina pointed at the house right beside hers. Pete shot a look at it and crease lines quickly formed on his head.
"Is it safe to leave her there?" He returned his gaze to Lina. "I thought you just moved back."
