L13-3 Hate

After escaping Yellow Box warehouse, L made a getaway in the crepe truck and parked it in the spacious lot of a pachinko parlor. After a while, Maki regained consciousness in the rear seat of the truck.

"Are you all right?" L asked her.

Maki bit her lip and stared at the mark on her arm. And L stared at her as if reading her emotional barometer.

Maki looked up and suddenly bolted for the door. But L immediately intercepted her.

"Where are you going?"

"Let go of me! Im going to kill her! I believed her."

If you kill Dr. Kujo out of hate, Maki, you're no better than they are."

"My father was killed in front of my eyes. Betrayed by the person I trusted the most. You don't know how it feels to lose your mother and father and be all alone."

"Yes, I do." He took out a picture of Watari he'd carried with him since his mentor s death. "I'm an orphan too. Watari, my greatest supporter, was killed by Kira. I, too, am alone in this world. That's why I understand how you feel."

"You too, Ryuzaki...?" Maki thought she detected the same inconsolable sadness in L's eyes as he stared at the picture. Troubled as she was by hearing L's past for the first time, Maki could feel her anger dissipate.

"That they injected you with the virus was unexpected." L began to work his mind, biting his nails as usual. "Suddenly we have many things we must do. We must keep the antidote from falling into the hands of the enemy, find someone who can produce the antidote to save you, and find out how the enemy intends to use the antidote. We're going to be very busy."

L's nail biting grew louder, echoing inside the truck. Maki stared at L, who seemed suddenly more alive than she'd ever seen him before.

"You seem...happy, Ryuzaki."

"Not at all." L shook his head as he started the truck. "First, we have to rescue Suruga."

Displayed on the laptop sitting on the passenger seat was a GPS with a blinking red S.
