L07-3 Flight

"Now onto the next phase of our plan." L brought up meteorological data on the laptop and fumbled around in the truck for a long tarp. "It's my hot air balloon," he explained in the most bare-bones way.

So this was all a part of his plan too...S uruga watched L quickly put together a burner and assemble a black plastic gondola. The balloon had been delivered to Suruga while he was having the truck modified, and he had simply loaded the cargo into the truck without noting its sender or contents.

"The wind will shift west around midnight. We'll fly as close to Osaka as we can."

"I see; we'll be virtually undetectable flying in the dark. And by air, there won't be any fallen trees to worry about."

Suruga started to climb into the gondola when L stopped him.

"Mr. Suruga, this balloon is for two."

"You want me to stay behind?"

"Yes, we'll need the truck once we arrive in Osaka. You'll need to repair it and get it to Osaka somehow. You'll have to modify it again, since the inspection checkpoints are on the lookout for a sweet potato truck."

Slowly the burner filled the envelope with hot air and the balloon began to take shape.

"By the way, Mr. Suruga, you have a class two boat license, do you not?"

"Yeah, but you probably knew that when you checked out my history. What, is there going to be a boat after the balloon?"

"Yes, it is a possibility."

Now what , Suruga thought to himself, but he no longer felt the need to ask. L would tell him, of course, but Suruga now felt that asking him would spoil the surprise.

The balloon began to lift softly off the ground. L hopped into the gondola and then, with arms outstretched, collected Maki and placed her next to him.

"See you in Osaka, Ryuzaki! Take care, Maki!"

"Take care, Mr. Suruga!" Maki shouted.

Gradually the black balloon ascended and made its way under the cover of darkness. As it gained altitude, the balloon caught a westward breeze. A sea of city lights spread out below. The orderly street lights, the blinking traffic signals, the lamps illuminating the home windows...To Maki, they all seemed to flicker like the crystallizations of people's hopes and dreams. "Isn't it pretty, Ryuzaki?" She thought of all the beautiful lights and what remained of her short life, and she began to tear up.

L did not hesitate to take her hand this time, and he held it tightly. "There is happiness in each and every one of those lights. I won't allow anyone to shatter them."
