L05 Pirates

Two boats cruised the calm waters of Osaka Bay under the cover of night. As they headed for the light of the cruiser ahead, Kujo, a passenger on the lead ship, murmured, "How clever of you to think of the open sea, L. There's little threat of the virus spreading here."

Yoshizawa, binoculars in hand, spoke to the members aboard both vessels over a transceiver. "The girl is aboard the cruiser. We'll split up and attack from both sides in five minutes. We need to take them before L has the chance to use the Death Note." Yoshizawa saw the men on the deck aboard the boat cruising alongside them nod. "Unlike the warehouse, there's nowhere to escape this time."

A third ship altered course, churning up a huge wake as it cut across the sea lanes and blocked the Blue Ship vessels' course toward the cruiser. Before anyone could understand what was happening, the interceptor flooded the decks of the ships with blinding white light.

The interceptor's crew wore no military uniforms, but rather sunglasses and gauze masks. With a minimum of movement, the boat had succeeded in containing the two Blue Ship vessels and prevented them from getting any closer to the cruiser.

"These bastards are pros. Dammit! We can't get any closer!" Yoshizawa said over the radio.

Kujo threw an arm over her eyes and squinted carefully. "Sunglasses and masks...to guard against the Death Note. The FBI is protecting L," Kujo said, astonished.

"What's happening, Kujo? I thought you manipulated the FBI into killing L."

"L...just what kind of spell did you cast?" Kujo had no way to learn the reason for the FBI's change of heart, of course. While it was still possible to hack into the Kira Investigation Headquarters' system, it would certainly seem odd if Kujo, who was threatening the president posing as L, asked him why the U.S. hadn't moved to kill L.

"What do we do, Kujo? We can't go back and face Matoba after this."

Kujo stared past the interceptor and toward the yacht. Its proximity was tantalizing, but there was no way for the Blue Ship vessels to reach it. Kujo could only bite her lip...and contemplate her next step.

Aboard the cruiser, L and Maki were watching television, unaware of the excitement only a few knots away. The Tigers were playing the rival Giants. Maki, wearing a Tigers' cap and with a plastic megaphone in hand, yelled and screamed at every move the players made. Contrary to the warmth with which Hitomi looked on, L, who also wore a Tigers' cap, observed Maki curiously.

"Get a hit! A homerun every at-bat!"

"This player's batting average is .251, so the odds of his hitting a homerun every at-bat is about once every five thousand games."

"I know that!" Maki shot him a discouraged look. "But you're supposed to cheer loudest for the underdogs. That's what diehard fans do! Oh, how I'd love an autographed ball!"

"You really love this team."

"Of course! There isn't anyone in Osaka who doesn't love the Tigers."

After watching Maki go on excitedly about the game, L turned his attention on the computer and stuck a manju in his mouth.
