Chapter 34: Not Love

They found Maeve first. She sat on a protruding tree root at the top of a shallow embankment flipping her dagger over and over in her hand. With some sunlight, this location would have been an excellent vantage point. As it was, solid darkness swallowed the view.

Before they approached her, Brynn held a hand up to William. He correctly interpreted this as a request to allow Brynn room to speak with her friend alone. He incorrectly interpreted that he was meant to continue searching for Garan without her.

“I’ll go get the walking sack of horse sh*t,” he said with a sly smile. “Don’t worry, I won’t kill him. The moment’s passed.”

Before Brynn could form the words to stop him, William winked and vanished into the night. She sighed heavily and shot a look up at the waning moon.

‘Help them,’ she said in her heart. ‘Especially Garan. Don’t let William kill him.’
