The Ways of Mortals

DAENA'S POV

The pain was gone. In its place was a new sensation. Like a connection to something massive. Something there stuck at the corners of my mind and soul. A grand hook imbued into my very core of being.

How I could feel something in my soul was beyond me, I just knew.

I looked around to note that I was still lying on the ground. Grey clouds overhead and flashes of lightning and booms of thunder echoed through the sky.

The wind moved and I felt a slight breeze tickle my long ears and flutter my hair.

'Your family needs you.'

'Go'

'Save them".

I jerked up as a bolt of energy shot through me. I felt my beating heart as my eyes scanned my surroundings. There was nothing, but bodies and a now blazing inferno.

"I didn't just hear a voice. It couldn't be." A look down at my body confirmed my previous state. Once dead, now lived.

"I assure you, it is real." I was on my feet in a flash my eyes going everywhere fright and confusion prevalent within me. While I knew the words of the voice were true I still wasn't clear on what was going on. I turned to dash in a random direction and hide only to come face to face with a girl.

Beautiful was an insult to use as a description. Her skin was flawless. Her eyes were like the very sea that attempted to reflect their beauty but failed. Her hair was smooth and dark as the night.

A gown of gold draped down her body. Her feet were wrapped in golden sandals. Her lips were thin and pink. Her gaze was fierce, annoyed yet soft and understanding.

"Run, and your family dies." That stopped my thoughts.

"Family. My family. " I don't know how or why but I just knew this girl could help them. "Please save them, save us". I begged. A sigh escaped her right before she spoke.

" I already gave you the sword to slay your enemies. You prayed and I answered. Now, what would you do my dear Fearghal? Remember your due has been claimed" she vanished with that. No poof, movement, or wind. She simply wasn't there anymore.

I stood there for a few moments lost in my thoughts when a scream from behind caught my attention.

I shoved the unnecessary rambles in my head away quickly moving toward the sound. This part of the city was already in shambles. The invading soldiers of the Warlord Asdil had razed it all to the ground. Brought untold terror to them. As I looked a warmth grew in my chest as my anger stirred.

Another scream much closer this time perked my ears up. My head turned in that direction. Hoarse laughs and chuckles reached my ears as I drew closer.

I rounded the corner heart still beating harshly. I found cages, women, and children all locked in them. Men lying dead around. Cries and pleas. My hands shook, and my palms tightened. I didn't know it yet but my eyes had gone from their beautiful green as I seethed at the scene to a blazing orange.

I didn't even know where my confidence came from. But it was less of confidence and more of rage. The rage one got from seeing family harmed, the rage felt when faced against someone two times your size, knew you had no chance but still wouldn't sit back and watch your loved ones get harmed. That rage filled me like a total wave trying to cram into a bowl. It simply overspilled.

"Look, another one came straight to us. "

"stupid farm girls"

"Get her Isga. Maybe we can have a taste before the boss returns from the palace"

" I hear the queen is a beauty. Hopefully boss allows us a share".

I exploded. The two men who'd come to take me halted right before me their laughs ceasing as both looked down at my arms in terror.

"Mage!"

The first one shouted already lurching back.

I was having none of that. It felt like the warmth within my body was moving, spilling out, and soaking up. It increased, like the suns slowly filling Vaustaris with warmth, causing pain in my arm. I barely noted it though, my attention on the second man lunging forward. His eyes told a tale of greed and less fear.

"Mage. We could fetch fine Volti gold from her head". his left hand sent a blow to my head aiming to knock me out.

The ground shook for some reason and he staggered. Yet I remained upright. I didn't even bother thinking about what just happened. My arm shot out grasping onto the shoulder of the stumbling filth of an Evershu.

The disgust I felt in myself at the thought that this man was of the same race as I made my arm boil even more while the rest of my skin crawled. Then his screams began, his hand striking my arm repeatedly to get me to let go. The heat in my arm slowly ebbed as I felt it flow out of me and into him. He dried up instantly before he combusted, a pillar of fire bright and golden as his body burned. The heat from it was scorching and I felt my clothes already boiling from just its mere proximity. His screams had long stopped as the fire quenched leaving nothing but white bone.

A thrum in my mind made me twitch a bit. I rarely felt those. Template notifications. I ignored it for now.

The second who pulled away when he first noticed something off gulped as he watched the brutality of it.

"Girl. Calmly put out whatever is in your grasp or I will put you down". the huge male who stood next to the other Evershus growled as he walked closer. His arms bore a swirling blue tattoo running up them. His skin was pale ash but much darker, yet it was the three short-looking lines on both sides of his neck that had me pausing.

"Order of the Great beyond. I wonder what a reclusive Qitsalrmer is doing here on land, our lands."

The Qitsalrmer began shrugging as his hands raised. His tattoos glowed bright blue and the air suddenly got drier as a ball of water materialized around his arms.

"You're not the only one special here girl" he growled.

I frowned as I watched unsure of what to do now. Watching his eyes hard and his lips twisted in a grin as he stalked up like a predator I could see Adsil's face.

Then it was replaced with hers, the female who had materialized before me. Her calm gaze judging and questioning. Wondering if I truly could do it. If I could use what she had given.

'What had she given? The flames. The male had water' A feeling of reproach hit me. Like my thoughts warned me to not commit blasphemy. Then my mind pushed me to look. To see.

'See what?' I made a mental prod deep within me, searching for something I knew was there but couldn't grasp. A thought rose in my mind. Whatever it was should be reflected in my template.

"Body".

A little flash of blue appeared in my eyes Words that rolled down within my eyes. It took just a second to read it all. After all, I was familiar with it all. Yet some things had changed. Some things were new.
