Chapter 6

When I got home from school, I dropped off my bag in my room upstairs and went down to the basement to grab the large bin of costumes and fabric. After heaving it up the stairs and into my room, I set the bin down next to my bed, removed the lid and started to go through it. Inside, I found a black tunic, a pair of pants and some tall black leather boots to use for my hero costume.

I laid the clothing out on my bed, to get a visual of what my costume is going to look like.

I'm going to need a shirt under that, I thought as I was eyeing the outfit.

But I wonder what it'll look like if I put…

.I went into my small wooden closet and pulled out my black and white tuxedo patterned shirt I sewed on the front. I set the shirt on the bed with the developing costume.

Perfect.

Now, what about a cape?

And maybe a belt with pockets.

With only taking washroom breaks and eating supper, I cut and sewed together a purple cloak with a high collar and a brown belt with pockets, that fits snug around my waist. I smiled confidently at my now complete costume, deciding what to do next.

I don't think it will hurt anybody if I go out for a test run. Besides, I need to gain more control of my power.

When I looked at my digital radio clock on my shelf, I bit my tongue.

Crumb, it's 7:30pm, my mom won't let me go out into the city at this time of night.

Then I glanced at my window and didn't hesitate to open it, after I threw on the costume. I quietly snuck out my window, stepping onto a small stack of wooden crates that leaned against the house. I carefully got down from the stack and onto the rough pavement in the sketchy dark alley, that lay between my bungalow and a 30-floor apartment building. I think the first test run I should do is to try and turn into a bird. I put my arms up into the air and whispered 'raven'. But nothing happened.

"Why isn't this working?" I quietly murmured to myself.

"I accidentally transformed myself every other day. But when I want to use it, it doesn't want to cooper-".

Suddenly the world began to expand, as I shrank down into a small black feathered raven. I shuddered my bony wings, thinking about the weird tingly feeling I just felt. Then I fanned out my ruffled wings and tail feathers, beginning to flap my way up into the air and onto the dark, rough square shingles upon the roof of my house.

My sharp talons scraped against the shingles as I landed on them and hopped off again to carry me up to the apartment building. Once I got up there, I collapsed back into my human form, falling down on my side, gasping for air.

"Damn, flying in a lot harder than it looks" I murmured to myself, as I breathed hard.

I shifted my gaze from the firm black rooftop to one of the most beautiful, breath-taking views I've ever seen. Just beyond the edge of the apartment building, were the bright lights of Manhattan, lighting up even the darkest areas in the city. As I stared at the lit cityscape, I slowly got up from the ground and cautiously walked towards the edge.

Wow

I thought, feeling the wind pushing me closer to the edge of the building.

What a view.

Image where my powers can take me once I can fully con-.

A huge gust of wind caught me off guard and thrusted me forward, plummeting a 14-year-old girl down 28 stories, towards the frequent busy traffic below.
