Chapter 177: Waiting For An Explanation

*Shelby*

We sat in the stuffy, antiseptic-smelling clinic waiting room, hands clasped tightly together. I refused to look at those pictures on the walls, the ones of happy mothers holding smiling babies.

Beside me, Michael's face was a harsh shade of red, and I could hear his teeth grinding as he stewed over the ultrasound results. I couldn’t blame him. My mind was racing, trying to figure out what had happened. How could any of this ever have transpired?

We were pregnant with twins, but one of the three embryos they'd implanted was not ours.

I felt like I had stepped off the edge of a cliff, my stomach twisting as my mind struggled to comprehend what we had been told.

Michael, on the other hand, was livid, ready to demand answers from anyone who would listen. My gentle, loving man was not the sort of person to get on the wrong side of. He was also powerful and would not take no for an answer or allow things to be swept under the rug.

He saved his gentle side for me.
