Chapter 272 : The Floating Sense of Unease Grows

The sun was high and unrelenting, but the salty breeze rolling off the ocean made the heat bearable. It was a nice change of pace from the weather in New York. I led the way down the winding paths of the resort, Lauren walking beside me.

It was nice to get to spend more time with Lauren. I felt like I’d really started to get to know her for the first time in her life. She was surrounded by friends that were clearly only there for the money anymore and she was walking taller, seeming to come out of her shell.

Thomas and Amelia trailed behind us, their laughter the perfect soundtrack to a day like this. They darted between palm trees and hibiscus bushes, playing some imaginative game only twins would understand. I swore they had their own language, sometimes.

"Look at them go," I said, nodding towards the twins. "You'd think they had engines strapped to their feet."
