"Mrs. Astor," he said as I heard a door shutting, more men filing in around Mr. Cavalier. "I suspect you have numerous questions about why you’re here, and what might happen next."

I eyed him warily but nodded, unable to speak due to the gag in my mouth.

He sighed deeply, raking a hand through his graying hair. "I was afraid this course of action would be necessary, but–drastic measures, as they say."

My brow furrowed in confusion.

"Ah, I suppose I'm getting ahead of myself." He knelt down beside me, gaze judicious. "Let's start over from the beginning, shall we? I'll make you a bargain–if you agree not to call out or attempt to draw any undue attention, I'll remove that gag. We can have a civilized conversation like adults. Do we have an agreement?"
