" Has Gwenie been picking up your calls?" Bain asked Alec in a slightly panicked tone.
He had Intel from his men about Mr.Fin. Gwen had hired a private detective. This meant there was a high possibility that she already found out about everything. They had to get to her fast.
The longer she was left to herself, the harder it would be to pacify her.
" I haven't heard from her all day. " Alec was unfazed as he shut his car door.
" Why are you so...composed?" Bain couldn't understand him anymore. " Aren't you worried that she knows everything?"
Alec didn't sat a word. His expression was bland. Bain shook his head.
" Or is it that you already know that she found out everything?" Bain noticed his slight change of mood.
" Aren't you scared?"
" Scared." Alec chuckled lightly. " That's an understatement. I'm terrified. " He leaned against his car and gazed at the star embellished night sky. It's beauty was greatly contrasting their situation right now.
" You know...I'm glad she found out already. I had no idea how I'd tell her. "
Bain stared at him for a while and followed him and leaned next to him. " You know, Marcus was my man. My brother. My friend...family. "
He paused and took a deep breathe.
" And when he died like that...I swore I'd kill the bastard that took his life. I'd send them and their family straight to hell. " He glanced at Alec.
" Who would have imagined I'd be out here chilling with him. Staring at mother fucking stars." He laughed heartily.
" Don't forget the part where you date his mom." Alec added. Bain froze for a second and this only made Alec laugh louder.
" What? You thought it wasn't obvious? You guys are always all over each other. Plus. My mom tells me everything. "
" Fucking momma's boy. " Bain shoved him playfully.
" You know...one thing I've learnt from the line of business we deal in is that sometimes...if not...all times...we're forced to do things we never thought we'd do. Things we wish we could undo. Things we never heal from. "
" And that's why , we should be more open in our thinking because this world is difficult. It's hard to find stability , peace...love. "
" What do you think is going on in Gwen's mind right now?"
Bain scoffed." Well...I have no idea. "
" Alec! " Marylynne waved from the porch. "You guys should come in. It's getting pretty cold out there."
" Coming Marylynne!" Bain tugged at Alec. " Let's get in. "
" Nah. I'll wait for her from out here. "
" No need to wait."
Gwen was standing a few feet from them. Her cheeks were a bit puffy from cold.
" I guess I'll leave you two alone for a while. " Bain glanced at Alec, then at Gwen.
" Gwen...I-" He was silenced by a rigid smack across the face. " I deserved that."
" You..." She rained down on him with a flurry of punches, slaps and whatever she could manage. He didn't move.
When she was tired, she dropped to the floor. She didn't know how to feel. The man she loved was her father's killer. How ironic! She laughed to herself. Her father'd killed Alec's sister.
" Why?"
Alec squatted besides her. He knew this was hard and nothing he could say would make a difference. What happened can't be changed.
" Gwen..." He held her cheek delicately. She slapped his hands away.
" Don't touch me!" She felt like her chest was cut open . She had a fire in her tummy and her brain was heating up. " Please, do not touch me."
" Gwen. I love you. " His words were brief but she could tell he had a lot to say. He was assuring her of his feelings for her. He was asking her to trust him.
" I'm sorry. "
His blue eyes had something she'd never seen before. Tears. She didn't know when she started to cry too.
" Why?..." Her voice was weak. She'd never felt this helpless. Her body was aching. All she could do was look into those eyes. Those blue eyes.
" I'm sorry. " He wrapped her in his embrace and hugged her tight. She didn't fight this time. She just hung onto him and sobbed quietly.
" I'm sorry. Gwen, I'm sorry. "
