James woke up with a glitter in his eyes. Apparently, his mother did love him and he was going to have his newly formulated plan succeed because of that. He then remembered the fact that his parents were dead and felt a tinge of sadness. He suddenly looked around as was his habit taught by Selvin. Now he did know the reason for all his supposedly training. His mother had meant him to attend the academy, mainly Fenrir's fifth or sixth tier, which was the lowest branch.
He suddenly noted Selvin entering the room. Yes, He had been put unconscious by that knight maybe. It might have been her duty assigned by her mother as he was supposed to be a valuable commodity. Obviously, business always went even beyond the grave as per the goddess's testaments.
"Are you happy that your mother died, boy."
"No Selvin, but I am happy hearing her will of having me trained."
"Is that what the knight told you. Let me guess, your mother loved you and you are supposed to work hard and live for her namesake."
"Somewhat along that line."
"Boy, they tell that to every orphan. It is just too make you work harder and if you ever decided to not follow the order, they can call blasphemy and pass divine punishment on you."
"Oh, I know. Just that I don't care why someone gave me or what I am supposed to do to keep it, just that I care of what I received."
"That is a good attitude boy."
"So, five years until training."
"Four years max. You as a male will have to do initialisation ceremony."
"Okay, how am I training."
"Lets go to the basement."
The both went to the secret basement accessible through their dining room. After Selvin reached the bottom he turned on the lights. Inside was a library full of books. There were weapons and staffs too. James went and picked the books one by one.
"So that is why I was taught to read."
"Well kind of."
"So what's the catch."
"You were very young but you had pretty much good reserves of mana hence your mother decided to make you a trump card and thought of keeping it hidden. The ring you are wearing does that. You were taught to read but as you were really interested in reading, at least whenever you got a piece of parchment, she had this vague idea. A male wizard. Not Mage a
wizard nonetheless. You were supposed to learn these and here some books are even related to the secrets of Fenrir academy too, so that you can take full advantage. The you were supposed to help her climb the walls of society."
"Alas she died. At least she was good on bed. Anyway, I never trained you. Everything I have said and showed you was what your mother asked me to show you. As she is dead, you are not going to leave this basement and live here. I will take care of your food and necessities. There is a bathroom there and a bed too. You are supposed to learn each and every one of these things, learn to use every kind of these weapons and mainly, train yourself."
"Okay. Your teachings or not, I have developed my character to be pretty mature and cynical, so pray why do these things after she is dead."
"It is said in the holy scripture that even after a person is dead the slaves merits are considered her merits and henceforth she gets a better place among the great goddess Fenri. "
"Fine, but isn't she just supposed to be an ordinary low-level merchant."
"Your mother used to live in block C of the city and after your powers were sensed she sold her other slaves and moved to block E. She bought an old house of primitive designs along with the basement and silenced everyone who knew about it. And she sold Jewels under pretence, evaded taxes, bought books and lead a pretty simple life."
"Really." James said with a real smile on his face. He knew that he was not supposed to show his real emotions on his face.
"So, why are you answering me Selvin."
"Because you are my master until you turn sixteen and then I am to join her in the afterlife."
"Wicked."
Selvin looked at him without an emotion and then handed a letter addressed to him. He then left the basement to do whatever he was supposed to do. James noticed it was addressed by his mother and read it slowly.
"Dear son
Yes I am dead and not by my doing. Obey every order, learn, prepare and train. Know that Fenri is the only true Goddess. And if you do not do so you will die."
He knew now what he had to do. He was going to be a master.
