CHAPTER 31

I shut my eyes tighter as I felt the sun dance on my eyelashes, cursing the morning for arriving so early. My body was tired from all the shifting and running, the mountain chill now permanently residing under my skin.

When the sun refused to disappear, I turned my back on the window, reaching out to hug Elijah. I was surprised he hadn’t woken up already, he had been up since dawn every morning for the past few days. Maybe he was finally getting that burst of energy out of his system and going back to being a normal kid. The Goddess knew that was hard enough to handle.

My hand fell on the cold, empty bed beside me and my eyes sprung open. I blinked a few times to adjust to the brightness, then looked around. The covers on his side of the bed were tossed aside and both the sheet and his pillow were cold, which meant he had been up for a while, probably playing with Chris in the other room.
