“Goodnight, baby,” I whispered as I tucked Elijah in, kissing his forehead. He muttered something unintelligible, his eyes already fluttering closed. I had let him stay as late as he wanted since he was brimming with energy and excitement at the thought of staying here for a couple of days. He had spent the whole day playing with Gabriel and me, then with the rest of the staff, who were more than happy to spoil him with anything he wanted. I had almost thought that he’d end up not sleeping at all, but as soon as he stuffed his face with food and two deserts, he started dozing off at the table.
Gabriel had carried him to the room that Elijah had picked for himself, then left to take a call while I put him to sleep. Now that I could hear his even breathing and the soft snores suggesting he was deep into the land of dreams, I got up from the bed and headed toward the door.
