Prologue

Skateboarding to a stop in front of the dorms of First Floridian University, I swiped my forehead of the sweat accumulating there. One thing about West Palm, it was hot but not as hot as the Georgia heat. Picking up my board, I swiped my ID to enter the building and showed my card to the attendant at the front desk. Nodding her approval, I went up the stairs to my dorm room. Waving hello to my roommates, I clambered into my room and closed the door behind me. Dropping my bag on my bed, I sat at my desk and began typing away on my laptop.

Bzzz.

I groaned.

Not right now people...this author needs her beauty sleep.

Bzzzzz.

Fuck.

Cracking my eyelids, I peered at the digital clock that sat in front of me.

11:30 pm.

What could anyone want this late in the evening? It better be important.

Bzzzz.

Snatching my phone of the charger, I pressed the receive button to answer the call.

"Hel-"

"Majesty...grandma is gone." Mom said over the phone.

"What do you mean grandma is gone? I just was talking to her about going to Haiti to visit her."

"The doctors said it was a CVA?"

"A stroke...? Did they not explain what that meant when they were giving the prognosis?"

"Yeah...a stroke."

"God." I stated, falling back against my seat.

"I don't know what I am going to do without her, Maje..."

I couldn't really conjure up an answer for her. I was still processing that my grandma had passed away. I didn't know what I was going to do.

"How're the aunties," Was my next question.

"One is drinking out of her mind per usual and the other one can't stop crying."

"And you? Have you cried?"

"I can't bring myself to. Every time I feel like it the tears won't come."

I then heard some shuffling in the background and then a familiar voice rang through the phone.

"Majey, grandma is dead."

And that's when my dam broke.
