Pei Yueran had just finished reading over the last document she had to attend to. She let out a sigh of relief and stretched.
Although the influx of contracts brought about by their cooperation with Gaoyi Group had slowed down to a comfortable level, she was still buried neck deep in work.
Now that Han Yichen was not at home, she was almost always working overtime at the company.
In spite of the stress though, her hard work was obviously paying off as her table became freer by the day.
The plan was to finish her pressing projects first, so that she could fully submit herself to her mother and future mother-in-law for their brand of torture.
And torture it was. Pei Yueran sighed just thinking about it. Just for the venue alone, they have visited more than ten. She had been dragged along to see this garden venue or that beach themed hall so many times that she shuddered whenever she saw either mother calling.
Like, who even thought up the idea of a beach themed hall in the first place???
And that Chuan, he had the guts to laugh at her the last time she returned with her ankle aching. Hmph! She was determined to drag him along for the next "outing". It was their wedding after all, she refused to suffer alone.
She came alive just imagining the look on his face he would have on his face. It would serve him right.
Speak of Cao Cao, and Cao Cao appears. There was a knock on her door before Li Chuanmo let himself in after a few moments.
He stopped short as he saw the light in her eyes. "Your eyes are so bright that I'm sure you're up to some mischief. What are you planning? Am I safe?"
She chuckled. "You'll know soon enough."
"Naughty", he said, leaning down to flick her nose. She dodged his hand and laughed, "Stop."
Li Chuanmo eventually let her be. "Have you spoken to Mother and Auntie today?"
Pei Yueran shivered, "Not yet, I'm afraid to even speak to them now. Why?"
Li Chuanmo smiled. "Mother just called me now. She said she wanted to ask if we have decided our honeymoon destination."
Pei Yueran: "..."
Her blush was not very obvious, but Li Chuanmo still saw it. Just to get more reactions from her, he deliberately said, "That's the one part of the wedding I'm most looking forward to."
When the blush spread from her neck to the root of her hair, making her look flushed, Li Chuanmo nodded in satisfaction. This was the effect he was going for.
Then she suddenly hit him on his shoulder, "Is it fun to tease me like this?"
He pretended to shout in pain, "Help, she wants to beat up her husband to be. Is this the way you plan to treat me after marriage? Am I getting married to a shrew?"
Pei Yueran stopped purely because her hand hurt too much. Her smile threatened to burst out as she said, "Stop the nonsense. So what did you tell her?"
Li Chuanmo also became serious, "I said we haven't talked about it yet, but it might be abroad. She said they would host the boys, or they could go to City A."
"Sounds good. I really don't mind wherever."
"Are you sure?" At Pei Yueran's nod, he said, "Then leave it to me. I guarantee you will be very satisfied." The way he winked at the end of his words made Pei Yueran mistakenly think they were talking about something else, instead of a choice location for their honeymoon.
Before she could reply however, there was a knock at the door again. At her gentle "come in", a lady walked in. She was dressed in a wine colored pantsuit with a white inner silk blouse, along with black flat shoes.
She had eyes only for Pei Yueran as she dropped the file in her hand on the table, "The finance manager said you need to sign off on this, Special Assistant Pei."
Then to Li Chuanmo who was by now sitting across from Pei Yueran, she said, "Good day Chairman Li." He replied with a nod.
Pei Yueran responded and made quick work of her signature before handing the file back to the lady. Her smile was genuine as she said, "Thank you."
The lady smiled back and bowed at both of them before walking out.
"Is that your new P.A.?" Li Chuanmo asked conversationally.
"Yes, she's the one. Her name is Bei Fengxue." Her former P.A., Su Meilan suddenly quit a couple of weeks ago, saying she got an urgent call from home and had to go back home to take care of her sick mother.
She stayed on for two weeks to train her replacement and hand over. The new P.A. only resumed officially the day before.
"How is she?"
"It's too early to tell, but she seems quiet and good at her job." Pei Yueran answered.
"That's fine." Li Chuanmo fell silent, his gaze hooded as he stared with unseeing eyes in the direction of her name place holder. It was made of solid glass with her name written in semi cursive script calligraphy. It looked elegant and bold.
Not like Li Chuanmo was paying attention.
Acutely sensing his change in mood, Pei Yueran softly called, "Chuan".
Li Chuanmo was quiet for a few moments, but then he responded, "Mother called and asked me to pay more attention to her. So I investigated, and.... it's true. She's really ill. It's cancer....and the doctor said it's in the last stages." His voice came out low and halting.
Pei Yueran's heart tightened.
She knew who he was talking about without needing to ask. She reached across the table to hold his hand.
The way he gripped it for dear life confirmed her thoughts.
"I can't explain how I feel Ran. On one hand, it's the woman I have hated for decades. I once felt like I could actually kill her if she ever appeared in front of me.
"But seeing her look so frail and sick, I actually... actually wanted to cry. Here feels like there's something squeezing it." He said, using his free hand to point at his heart.
His voice had taken a brittle tone that made it sound like his throat was very dry.
"It doesn't make any sense. Tell me, why do I feel this way?" He finally looked at her, pain turning his sclerae red. His hazel eyes stood out starkly like green gems.
Pei Yueran responded gently, speaking past the lump in her own throat, "It's because you are only human, Li Chuanmo."
