Abigail continued to watch him as if willing him to respond to her words. But Christopher remained still, unresponsive.

Abigail watched his chest rise and fall with each breath, willing him to open his eyes, to speak to her, and to reassure her that everything would be alright. Yet there was only silence from his side, a deafening silence that threatened to consume her.

With a heavy heart, Abigail lowered her head, her forehead resting against Christopher's. She held his hand tightly as if trying to transfer her own strength and vitality to him. She pressed a tender kiss on his closed eyelids.

"Madam, you should leave now," the nurse reminded her, reminding her that her time in the emergency room was up.

Abigail reluctantly tore herself away from her husband's side. She cast one last loving gaze at Christopher, the man who had become her rock and anchor, before stepping out of the room.
