Jasper’s plea

"Ella!" Jasper pursued her, his long strides allowing him to catch up quickly. He was stunned as to why she was behaving like she didn't know him. "Stop," he commanded.

Ella's heart raced as she sensed him drawing near. She didn't dare look back, afraid of what she might see in his eyes.

Without breaking her stride, Ella muttered under her breath, "Go away. Just leave me alone."

His hand closed around her arm, halting her abrupt flight. "What's happening? Why are you avoiding me?" His furrowed brow reflected both surprise and worry. "What is going on?" he demanded. "Why are you avoiding me?"

Jasper had been en route to the office after a secret meeting, unaware that he would stumble upon her in this dangerous alley. Her unanticipated presence here, coupled with her avoidance, left him utterly taken aback.
