Chapter 10

A Small whistle followed from the direction, and they both tensed up...

"That's not a Rabbit... like in the movies" Sarah whispered

The forest was even more eerie than before because it was now dark, and the birds had gone to sleep. the woods was pitch black and they could hardly see further than their own hands. They both had one thing on their minds, but they couldn't be any farther apart on their thoughts.

'Is that Lily? I told her to stay inside, but knowing her, she probably got bored and ventured out. I thought I'd be back earlier'. Ramsey thought. He whistled back, but his whistle was different from the one they heard.

'If I can just slip out from behind him, I should be able to duck behind the trees and be on my way... I don't think I'd survive if they got me again, and I don't really trust this man'. was Sarah's thoughts

The bush rustled again, and a small figure stepped out from behind it with a small look on its face.

"Lily..." Ramsey said and stepped forward. He then began a march in her direction and said as he trudged up to her "I thought I told you to stay inside? Why did you leave, there are wild animals around here, and I need to know where you are when I get back, especially when I am holding the Gun. You know this..." He continued until he got close to her, and she hugged him; wrapping her arms around him, and sniffling.

"I was scared... I... I didn't know what to do" Lily said in her defense. She continued "I went to pick some berries for tonight, but when I came back, the door was open... I thought a deer had gotten in, so I stayed outside..." She looked up at him. "Please don't be mad"

"Are you hurt?" Ramsey asked her.

"No..." "who is she?" She asked back

"I have no idea, she says she's lost." Ramsey remembered Sarah and turned to look at her. "Where do you think you are going?"

Sarah was already tiptoeing away, when She heard his firm voice. She turned back with a sheepish smile, and said "Away"

"I can't let you go yet" He said, and both girls looked at him. He explained "We don't know you, and we can't trust you..."

"But I'm cleared, aren't I?" Sarah asked, cocking her head to the side again like she had done earlier.

"Well, I don't know if you are telling the truth in the first place, and I can't risk being found here." Ramsey was keeping a calm front, but he could hardly hold it together anymore 'what if she was sent? I can't... no... I won't go back

"Okay, you're coming with me..." He said, and held her hand. Leading her away from the hut, He looked back at Lily and said "I'll be right back, don't go anywhere."

Sarah grunted when he pulled her, and it was all she could do to not follow him. His grip was firm, and he walked like a well rested giant. She felt warm where he was holding her, and her arm was feeling weird; even though his grip was firm, he wasn't hurting her anywhere. They walked a little distance away from the house, and turned away from the pathway into the bushy area. Now Sarah could hardly tell where she was anymore.

"I can't take any chances, so I'll take you to the nearest road exit, and you'll hitch a hike away from here. You never saw me, and you do not know me; understood?"

Ramsey was not smiling

"Jesus! Yes, whatever... grandpa" Sarah hated that he was making her look stupid and weak. "You know, you sound like someone that's running from the government..."

"What gives you that impression?" He didn't even spare her a glance

"You talk military, and you seem to be in great haste to get rid of me, and whoever came here with me" Sarah noticed that his eyes seemed to get scrunched up, and she stated her observation out.

"You notice a lot... don't you?" Ramsey was amused. Who are you?

as if she read his thoughts, she said "My name is actually Sarah, I work... worked as secretary to ambassador Thompson, and I was supposed to be at a court hearing at nine AM this morning..."

There was a long pause, and then she stopped in her tracks and exclaimed.

"Oh My Gosh! I did have a court hearing today" Sarah began to pace the grounds.

"Huh... Where did you say you were from?" Ramsey now just wanted to get rid of her, considering the fact that she was probably a fugitive herself, since she was well involved with the government and was probably also a suspect in a murder. The murder of Ambassador Thompson was a wild one Ramsey reckoned. His first thought was to ditch this rabbit that had scurried too far and gotten into his own space.

"From?" Sarah was confused. what did that matter, and why did he ask it like that?

"I'm from Dustin" she replied as he seemed to really be waiting for a reply

"That's the place where the ambassador was assassinated right?" Ramsey asked looking her dead in the eye

"Why'd you say that looking at me like that?... Yeah?" She wasn't sure what to reply or how careful she should be with him right now, but she was sure she didn't want to give an answer that he wouldn't appreciate. she felt like she was being interrogated, and she didn't like the feeling at all

"You REALLY have to get out of here and away from us..." Ramsey spoke like he was only thinking out loud, but it was loud enough for her to hear and respond.

"Then get a move on" She replied him and tugged at his hand

He looked down at the joined hands and realized that they were still holding hands... or that He was still holding her hands.

"Let's get out of here" he said again and started to walk forward not letting go of the hand.

They kept walking through the woods and Sarah was worried they would get lost as it was getting dark already. She felt helpless and at his mercy but still felt like she could trust him somehow. They walked some ways forward, and took a turn where the route bent. It was evident that Ramsey knew these woods well and he just kept walking straight ahead following the path that Sarah suspected he had made himself.

Suddenly they were in an open space with the road in front of them and the woods ending only to continue on the other side. They stood there and Sarah doubted that she would be able to find a vehicle this late at night. The moon was already fully out and she hadn't realized it as the woods had completely deceived her. It was already probably midnight when the got to the road. After standing there for what felt like another two hours, the sound of an engine was heard and they both looked in the direction the 'car' was coming from.

Heading in their direction was a Ford Maverick and it was coming in fast. The driver saw two people standing by the road side and increased his speed. There were too many reports of missing people and killings on empty roads these days... his wife was waiting for him.

Ramsey immediately stretched his hand out making a thumbs-up sign with it, but the driver just increased his speed and went by them.

"Dammit!" Ramsey spouted and Sarah smiled. She truly didn't see them getting any help tonight because there were rarely any passing vehicles and their chances were even slim because it was night-time. About four cars passed by them again and each time Ramsey would try to stop them using his hands as a sort of flag.

After another hour had passed after the last vehicle passed, they both heard the now familiar drone of an oncoming vehicle. This time though, Ramsey did something Sarah nor himself expected. He pulled her by the hand and held her in place as they both now stood in the middle of the road. Sarah screamed and tried to get away, as the vehicle came into view. The driver, having dropped the snack he had in his hand which he wanted to eat, was not paying attention to the road, as he bent down to pick it up. It had managed to roll under the shotgun seat and was just within reach if he completely let go of the steering wheel. He did so and happy to have retrieved his run away midnight snack, looked back up the road only to find two people right in front of him standing holding hands in the middle of the road.

"What the Hell?!" He exclaimed as he almost broke the brakes and held his feet there to stop the car.

This is my first work, and I'll appreciate critical comments on the work please.

I'm very sorry I've been unable to post any chapters for so long. I'm looking to post about three other chapters before the next week runs out, and I promise to post more often than before. Thanks Birds
