Chapter 6

The grand ballroom of Tartal Palace was a magnificent sight, filled with the sound of music and laughter. Tonight was a night of great significance, marking the thirtieth birthday of Crown Prince Cornelius and the announcement of his engagement.

As Cornelius prepared himself for the evening, he reflected on the conversation with his father the night before. King Einar had summoned him to his chambers, a rare and intimate setting for a royal discussion. The King had spoken with a gravity that lingered in Cornelius's mind: "Prepare yourself, my son, and do not disappoint me. Whatever happens tonight is for your own good."

With these words echoing in his thoughts, Cornelius knew he needed to speak with Lady Annabeth and prepare for the changes that awaited him.

The night began with the formal introduction of the royal family by Elrod, the King's right hand and chamberlain. The guests hushed as Elrod's voice resonated through the hall.

"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests," Elrod began, "It is my honor to present the esteemed members of the royal family."

First, he announced, "His Majesty, King Einar Abner."

The King, a commanding presence with a long reign marked by wisdom and strength, received the applause with a gracious nod.

"Prince Octavius."

The King's second son, known for his calm demeanor and intellect, acknowledged the crowd with a measured bow.

"Princess Letiticia."

The youngest child of the King, Princess Letiticia, was cherished for her charm and youthful spirit. She waved warmly at the guests.

"Grand Duke Aphelion Abner and Grand Duchess Arabella, accompanied by their son, Prince Zephyr."

Grand Duke Aphelion, King Einar's younger brother, had earned his title through a distinguished career, including his past service as a Grand Cordon. His marriage to Arabella, daughter of Duke Lennon of House Callascione, began with reluctance but had blossomed into a union of mutual respect and affection. Their son, Prince Zephyr, stood with poise beside his parents.

"Archduke Ophelion Abner."

The youngest of the Abner siblings, Archduke Ophelion was a half-brother to King Einar. A former Grand Cordon, he was known for his chivalrous nature and had been the last student of Duke Lennon.

"And finally, our guest of honor tonight, Crown Prince Cornelius."

Cornelius, feeling the weight of the evening's significance, stepped forward. He was the heir apparent, a figure of hope for the future of the Andigre Kingdom, and tonight was his moment.

With the introductions complete, the celebration continued with grandeur and ceremony. Cornelius led Lady Annabeth to the dance floor for the first dance, marking the beginning of a memorable evening.

Later, Cornelius and Annabeth found themselves in the garden, a serene space known as "Einar's Eternal Bloom," dedicated in memory of his late mother. Cornelius took this moment to speak candidly with Annabeth about the uncertainties of the future.

"Annabeth," he began, "I want you to know how much you mean to me. But if things change after tonight, I hope you'll understand and forgive me."

Annabeth nodded, understanding the weight of his words. The engagement of the crown prince was a decision of the King, and she knew what this meant for their relationship.

Their conversation was interrupted by the sounds of laughter from another part of the garden. Curious, they approached a lively group gathered near a beautifully decorated pavilion.

Among the group were notable figures: Duke Spencer of Langston Kingdom, King Titus of Kustka Kingdom, Crown Prince Caspian of Agapov Kingdom, and Grand Duke Chrysalis of Bandini Kingdom. To Cornelius's surprise, Abel, the lady with the golden hair, was also present.

Annabeth recognized her immediately, having seen her before. Cornelius was equally taken aback by the unexpected reunion.

As they neared the group, Archduke Ophelion joined them, greeting everyone with a warm smile. "Ah, Cornelius, Annabeth, there you are! Let me introduce you to some dear friends," he said, gesturing to the group.

"This is King Titus of Kustka, Duke Spencer of Langston, Crown Prince Caspian of Agapov, and Grand Duke Chrysalis of Bandini," Ophelion continued. "And of course, you already know Abel."

Cornelius and Annabeth exchanged polite greetings with each member of the group, feeling a sense of camaraderie despite the formal setting.

As the group exchanged pleasantries, Annabeth, intrigued by the group's dynamic, asked, "How do you all know each other?"

Archduke Ophelion chuckled. "We're not just acquaintances; we're the best of friends. We met at the Academe abroad and have been inseparable ever since."

Crown Prince Caspian added, "Indeed, those were some of the best years of our lives. We've shared countless adventures and supported each other through thick and thin."

Annabeth smiled, feeling more at ease with the group. "It must be wonderful to have such strong bonds."

As the conversation flowed, Archduke Ophelion gently reminded them, "The event is about to start, and the announcement of the engagement will follow soon."

Before the group dispersed, Annabeth turned to Cornelius with a curious expression. "How did you meet Abel?" she asked, her voice filled with genuine interest.

Cornelius hesitated for a moment, recalling their first encounter. "I met Abel at my favorite restaurant," he explained. "It was one of those unexpected meetings that stay with you."

Abel, overhearing the exchange, offered a knowing smile. "It seems fate has a way of bringing people together," she remarked.

As they exchanged these words, Cornelius felt a knot tighten in his stomach, but he maintained his composure. He knew this was a pivotal moment in his life.

Annabeth, sensing his unease, gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. "Whatever happens, I'm here for you," she whispered.

Before they could delve further into conversation, Cornelius noticed Duke Spencer looking at him with amusement. The Duke's laughter bubbled up, drawing everyone's attention.

"Spence, what's so funny?" Christabel asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh, nothing, really," Spencer replied, stifling his laughter. "I just can't believe the coincidence of seeing you all here."

Cornelius, aware of the evening's significance, decided it was time to take his leave. He turned to Abel, offering a polite nod. "It was a pleasure seeing you again, Abel. I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening."

Turning to the group, Cornelius said, "I should be heading back inside. It was wonderful meeting all of you. Annabeth, shall we?"

He offered his arm to Annabeth, who smiled and took it. As they walked back to the grand ballroom, Cornelius couldn't shake the feeling of anticipation building within him.

Duke Spencer watched them leave, and as soon as they were out of earshot, he burst into laughter. Christabel looked at him with an amused expression as she continued to gaze out at the night sky.

Spencer shook his head, still chuckling. "I just can't get over the fact that they all managed to meet here of all places."

"Shut up, Spence," Christabel muttered with a small smile, knowing that tonight was just the beginning of a new chapter in all their lives. The evening was full of promise, and as the stars twinkled above, the guests of Tartal Palace gathered to witness a new chapter unfold in the history of the Andigre Kingdom.

Back in the ballroom, the atmosphere was electric with anticipation. The guests waited eagerly for the announcement, knowing that the evening would mark a significant milestone in the life of the kingdom's heir. As Cornelius and Annabeth rejoined the gathering, he took a deep breath, ready to embrace whatever the future held.
