I made my way downstairs, my heart beating a mile a minute at the free-wheeling of my mind. I had allowed myself to go back into that dark memory. Rocking like a little kid who didn’t know how to cope.

She’d heard noises coming from our house and watched as my uncle jog up the street in the park’s direction. Ms. Jenkins rightly guessed he had been in search of me and she’d called the police. I had left a note for my mom after all…
