Shondra scrambled to the end of the couch, pulled her legs up to her chin, and rocked. Words tumbled from her lips like a raft down a waterfall, /"He tried to own me that day. He hurt me. Nearly killed my mamma. You or any man won’t own me./"

I hid my balled fist behind my back and forced myself to speak calmly. /"Who, hurt you, Shondra?/"
She dipped her head forward and spoke to her knees, /"My uncle./"
