Chapter 13: Kate's Room

Kate shut the door to her apartment and then leaned against it. Sliding down to the floor, she almost fell asleep, but her mind wouldn’t allow it. One of the main reasons she moved to Caribou Falls was to leave everyone who knew about her and her family and their opinions behind.

She felt empty inside. Kate knew she should feel sad, sobbing uncontrollably when she thought of her mom or at least furious with Eva for what she said in front of the people she saw almost every day.

But she wasn’t. She couldn’t feel anything inside, as though her ability to feel had been removed.

As she dwelled on what was said about her, Kate wasn’t entirely certain the outcome would have been different had she picked up the phone. Her dad had told her to leave that life behind and not look back. Would he have asked her to come back?

Eventually she rose to her feet, removed her coat and scarf and went to her room.
