Felicity grimaced before standing. Her legs were tired and weak, but they still had a long way to go before she could rest. There was another rumble in the distance that made the ground shake, and Felicity threw out her hand to the wall to stabilize herself.
"What is happening?" Aston muttered to himself.
Felicity bit her lip. "They should have stopped following us by now. They know they can get jail time if they do decide to harm innocents in public."
"But who knows since everyone is going crazy at the moment," Aston said.
Felicity grew quiet before realizing the grim dawn that was upon them. The reality of peace was too far away since there were still no answers from the government about the raure situation.
People didn't even know whether the raures were truly real or not since it was only speculation. Felicity decided to keep quiet about it, but when the time arose, she wasn't going to stay silent any longer.
The government was its best to control the violent outbursts. But it was hard since they were focusing their strength out at sea where all the engyures were opening up and causing catastrophes.
Due to the small scale of the range of engyures, she knew that the government could get away with it since there wasn't a lot of coverage overseas, but it seemed as though their time was up.
Then again, most of the rebels were adults who were afraid of getting drafted and didn't even stem from the fact that there could be a possibility of an otherworldly entity walking the face of the earth.
It was a mess now that other nations were turned toward the matter with countries reaching out for information and help as they received the same pressing calls for help.
No source was truly reliable at that point since the information that was getting passed around was only speculation of what was to come.
"Let's go," she muttered.
Felicity slung her arm around her brother's shoulder, and he helped her down the stairs onto the solid concrete ground.
They carefully walked out and peeked their heads around the corner to see what was happening. When they saw that the coast was clear, they ran towards the street that led home with the harsh voices that chased after them.
Luckily, they were able to shake them off their trail since they were careful about staying in the shadows and going behind the small backstreets before coming to their street.
People were standing on their lawns with their hands above their eyes to shield themselves from the sunlight and inspect the suspicious color of the sky.
Felicity collapsed on the doorstep, and Aston lifted her as he pounded on the door. Their mother opened the front door with an apprehensive expression before rushing them inside and locking the door.
Aston handed their mother the bags, speaking quickly of the matter that just went down outside while the television screen was alight with bold headlines flashing.
"Where is Dad?" Aston asked.
"He got called down by the neighbor on Florence Street to fix a water heater before all the bombs went off," her mother answered.
Those weren't bombs. She kept the thought to herself as she sat down on the sofa, gathering herself. She didn't get anything back yet after completing her tests earlier in the year.
She got a scholarship as promised composed of a large amount of money and a ticket to a well-known university, but she had the inkling that she would never get to experience it.
Her mother's eyes flashed after talking to Aston and met her eyes. "Felicity, what happened?"
"We got caught up in the protest downtown," Felicity said tiredly. "They were getting violent."
She pointed at her calf. "It's fine, it just stings."
Her mother walked over and pressed a hand to her cheek. "Still, be careful. You are a target after you finished the testing, Felicity. I didn't think the protests would hit the smaller cities, but here we are." She grabbed a tissue and pressed it to the wound. "When you two leave the house, please have someone accompany you."
Aston nodded slowly. "That's fair."
Her mother blew out a breath. "Okay, Aston can you get me the medical kit?"
Aston went into the small storage closet underneath the stairs and brought back a small white box. Her mother quickly took off the patch that Aston put on earlier and wrapped Felicity's small puncture.
Felicity jumped when her father burst through the door. He looked haggard; his tie was out of shape and his hair was windblown. Felicity paused. There was no wind earlier when she and Aston were out. But this didn't look like a passing gust, it was definitely storm-like.
She glanced out the window. The sky was blood red, a huge sign from the light signs she saw earlier. She brought her hands to her face with all the information adding up.
How was this possible? They lived far on land, not close to any ocean at all which means that an engyure could open up anywhere. Felicity dragged a hand down her face. It couldn't be.
