Flameguard Training Material, 5th Edition Abridged (c. 290 A.S.)

Chapter II: On the Purpose and Composition of the Flameguard.

The Flameguard shall exist as a deterrent force against Apostles of the Angel of the Deep (hereafter, 'Apostles'), to the extent that the Flameguard shall act as a military force for the Holy Order of the Angel of the Flame (hereafter, 'Holy Order').

The Flameguard is to be charged with several primary goals, to be enumerated below:

1) The protection of the Crown of Sidralis as both a material and immaterial construct;

2) The protection of the reigning Royal Family of the Crown, wherein protection of the Royal Family would not contravene (1);

3) As the need should arise, the defense of Sidralis, with specific adherence to Rosweiss and the seat of the Crown (should the Crown move, that location shall become the new location to be protected under (1) and (3));

4) Notwithstanding contradiction of the above points (1)-(4), providing reasonable defensive arrangements for the Holy Order.

The Holy Order may, at its discretion, deploy Priests and Bishops of the Holy Order to combat situations without the oversight nor intervention of the Flameguard, however best practices should extend some manner of communication between the branches should additional assistance be required.

With regard to rules of engagement, please see Chapter XX, On the Engagement Of Enemy Forces for more in-depth information. As engagement applies to the purpose of the Flameguard, all troops of the Flameguard shall have reasonable license to restrain, injure, or kill an enemy combatant, especially if that combatant should exhibit Blessings of the Deep. Such actions may fall under the purvey of conditions listed in Auxiliary A-7, Prisoners of War.

Wherein the enemy poses a significant threat to civilian life, soldiers of the Flameguard should and must be willing to sacrifice their lives to defend civilians or non-combatants, in accordance with the primary goals (1)-(4) listed above. Failure to abide by these rules will be considered 'Desertion of Duty' under the penal codes listed in Auxiliary A-4, Corporal Punishment and Punitive Measures.

The Flameguard is to be governed by one (1) standing Captain, whom shall be responsible for the daily operations of the Flameguard. At that Captain's discretion, a temporary Lieutenant position may be assigned for the purpose of management or combat efficiency. In demanding situations that contribute to the primary goals (1)-(4), that Flameguard Captain shall be granted extraordinary commanding power over ordinary members of the Holy Order, or any other force dedicated to the protection of the Crown (see, Auxiliary C-12, Extraordinary Powers of the Flameguard).

In such a case that no Captain is eligible or the current serving captain is incapacitated, command of the Flameguard shall be temporary assigned to the Archbishop of the Holy Order (or the next highest-ranking member of the Holy Order), until such a time as the Captain may resume their duties, or be replaced.
