lament of a songbird (1).

Ocean waves smashed into the cliff face with a sonorous roar.

Pieces of shale tumbled into the frothing tides, while towering stacks of rock rose out of the sea like hungry teeth. The ocean groaned, a primal maw that threatened to eat away at the foundation supporting the chapel sitting atop the cliff-face. One day, eventually, earth and rock would finally decay under the inevitable pressure of time, and the centuries-old church would fall into the ocean below to be utterly consumed by the ravages of nature.

Cardinal watched the ocean for a long while, the bitter winds whipping at his long coat. Seabirds screeched as they flapped high on the breeze, swooping down into the waters to snatch up fish. Small nests clung to the cliff, where infant birds squawked for food.
