It was hard to say what pervaded the air between us: it was hopelessness, it was desperation, and it was tiredness. It was neither. It was all. It was everything and it was nothing, all happening in the time between one breath and the other.
It was thick, heavy and pungent, the fickle space that separated us, capable of being closed with the smallest of movements, was charged and intense. Or maybe it was just the way he was looking at me, his gaze stronger than any force I had ever been forced to withstand.
