CHAPTER 65

  “Neither of you are to show up at the cabin either. Don’t come…I mean it, Kayla. I’ll be home in two weeks….. Don’t call me a whole lot and keep it between you two, or I’ll make life hell for you when I come back.”

  There’s a tense crackle of sparks between us as a stubborn gaze meets a fiery one, and I digest his commands. I'm annoyed that he’s once again putting a boundary between us and pushing me away but also celebrating that I get to call him.

  “Fine…. Just don’t get into trouble or do anything stupid while there. Keep your head down and rest. For once in your life, don’t do anything at all.” I scold him.

  “I can take that.” He goes to reach for it, and I push his hand away. I let him go to finish my brief tidying and then haul his suitcase upright to extend the handle and get it on its wheels.

  “There’s something else….” His voice wavers, and I sop to blink at him in question.

  “What?”
