Daniel's POV
I pulled back from the kiss and looked at her for a while. She slowly opened her eyes and stared back and time seemed to have slowed down at that moment until she blinked as her eyes widened slowly.
She covered her mouth with her hand before standing up and rushing away. I sat there in a daze, trying to comprehend what just happened.
I gradually stood up with a frown because I was confused as to why she ran away as if being chased by something. Walking back to my room, I laid on the bed as I recalled everything that happened today. Every moment with her made me crave for more, as if I was being pulled towards her by an unknown force.
Her smile, eyes, and even the way she bit her lips nervously captivated. Her eyes held some innocence, something I don't deserve.
I clenched my jaw. What is happening to me? Why am I thinking about her? Why did I enjoy her company? This was supposed to be a contract marriage, and there were rules guarding it that I couldn't afford to break.
I know I felt something, but I wasn't ready to name that feeling. Whatever it was and might lead to, it better not be love because that would never happen and should never happen.
I groaned before forcing myself to bed. I was woken by a loud ringing. Reaching for my phone, I glanced at and cursed before picking the call.
"Hello boss," Darryl started.
"Darryl stated your business for calling this early," I said grimly.
He paused for a while. "Boss it's 9:40, and you're currently running late for a meeting with the board members." He announced with a confused tone.
My eyes shot wide open as I hastily sat down and glanced at the clock. Damn! I was indeed running late.
"Boss, are you okay?" He sounded worried, and I completely understood that, especially with the fact that I barely came late for meetings.
"Darryl, where are you?"
"At the company boss," he replied, ready for any orders I had.
"Tell them any understandable excuses, and I'll be there in less than an hour." I ended the call directly while I rushed to the bathroom and got dressed quickly.
What happened? Why did I sleep that long? Then I remembered I had been thinking of someone throughout the whole night, that falling asleep was a miracle because I had almost given up.
The ride to the company took less than an hour and I took a long stride into the building.
"Boss?" Darryl called when he saw me. He was standing at the door with his eyes scanning me.
"Do you have everything set?" I asked, and he nodded and then opened the door. I stepped in and scanned everywhere.
Making my way to the short side of the long table, with eyes following my every step.
I didn't waste time and went straight to business. It took longer as they contemplated some issues.
"Sir the products we are to distribute would take a while," a member spoke.
"And why is that, if I may ask?"
"Right now the underworld is being investigated, and some goods are being double-checked."
"I see, and what does that have to do with our distribution?"
"Well, apparently the products we are to distribute would take a while until they are done. There's a crisis in the underworld as we speak, two powerful people are fighting for power. The time for them to choose the new king is close."
Upon hearing this, I felt concerned for no reason. "Alright then, we'll wait until everything is settled out, but I want every update about the progress. Meeting adjourned." I stood up, and they all stood up as well and bowed.
Stalking back to my office, I did some paperwork and then headed home. All this, Darryl seemed lost as he watched me inside the car.
"Darryl I'm sure you're not my bodyguard but more of my assistant."
He signed before he decided to speak up. "Pardon me if this may sound disrespectful, but you seem out of your today, like something about you changed."
I furrowed my brows. "What do you mean?"
"You seem… I don't know how to put it in words, but you came to work late, you agreed to what the members decided on without getting angry about the sudden delay and the fact that things wouldn't go as planned, plus you're leaving work by 3:25 and not 7 or 8. Boss, is there something I'm missing?"
I smiled and then looked at him. "You find that strange?" I know the question was dumb because everything he listed was precisely what I never did before.
"I believe. So?"
I sighed. "Darryl, nothing is wrong, I just want to go home."
"Why? Are you sick?" He asked again.
I closed my eyes and leaned on the headrest of the seat. "Not yet, but if you keep asking irrelevant questions I might actually get sick."
With that, he sealed his lips immediately.
I let out a sigh when I remembered what the member said about the underworld in chaos. I felt worried about Derick because he was part of the underworld, as much as I disagreed with him being part of it, I still felt worried because he held a strong place there. He was a Mafia and the king of assassins.
He was notorious and almost everybody knew of him, even though he tried to lie low people still tremble by just a mention of his name. With that much fear and power he could mutter, I was sure there was nothing stopping him from being the next king, so therefore he was everyone's target.
"Boss, we've arrived." Darryl informed me, and I slowly opened my eyes and got down.
Heading to my room, I stopped midway as my eyes averted to Regina's room and as if I were in a trance, I found myself walking towards her room and then knocked on her door.
"Yes, I'm coming," she replied and pulled the door open, but immediately stood still with widened eyes. My eyes trailed downwards, and I gulped greedily when I saw the small transparent piece that was tied securely around her chest.
