I looked up to see 6 gigantic dragons looking at me like I was a little monster.
I stayed in my standing position, refusing to be intimidated by the pressure of their gazes.
"Hahaha. This little one has a strong will. He'll make a great King for his generation" the older male, who I assumed was my grandfather, said
My father looked at me, full of pride.
But my grandmother was a different matter entirely. She intensified her gaze and started to slowly walk towards me. I figured out what she was doing and just stayed standing where I was, not backing down but prepared to dodge if she tested me with an attack. After coming right in front of me and growling in an attempt to make me submit, all I did was look at her and jumped onto her head. This shocked her so much she froze while I got comfortable as I curled up into a ball between 2 of her massive horns.
"He's to fearless" my mother said, looking her her mother-in-law with fear.
"He's just fine" her mother responded as she walked over to see her first grandchild.
"I think, he will do just fine in this world" my grandmother, whose head I was cured up on, said with a smile slowly growing on her face. She slowly turned and walked into the cave to lay down, not caring that the day had just started. She already knew how his first hours of life went since Dalma told everyone what had happened before he landed.
Both grandfather's gave each other a glance before taking off to announce to the rest of their race that the new king had been born.
.....
After a good nap, my wings felt well rested, and they even felt a little stronger. I looked around, realizing I was still on my father's mother's head. Noticing she was asleep, I slowly and carefully started getting off her head. After successfully making it to the ground without falling into a heap, I quietly walked to the cave entrance.
I didn't notice I had 4 sets of eyes watching me since, when I looked back, my grandmother had closed her eyes so she could see what I would do.
After getting past the entrance of the cave, I listened carefully to make sure no one had followed me. Hearing nothing, I started stretching, removing the last bit of sleepiness from my limbs, I started doing stretches on all my muscles, from my tail to my wings to my long neck. After 10 minutes, I decided it was time for some wing exercises.
I began by beating my wings in a similar fashion to how my mother was while she was flying. I knew this would take time and effort, but it would be worth it. To my surprise, it was remarkably easy to fly, if a bit tiring on my underdeveloped muscles. I started taking to the sky after only an hour.
Cave POV
My parents and grandmother's all came running out of the cave, having noticed I was gone. After looking around for a full 20 seconds my mother started to panic. "Where is he, he couldn't have gotten far. Did something grab him?!" she was about to have a panic attack.
"He's fine darling." my father said.
"Do you know where he is?" my mother said, not calming down at all
"Dalma, calm down and look up" my mother's mother said
"Up? What do you mean u....." she finally noticed me "WHAT THE HELL IS MY BABY DOING UP THERE??!"
"SHUT UP DALMA!" my father's mother finally had enough of the panicing Dalma
"...." Dalma wisely shut her mouth and just watched her, less than 1 day old, baby boy flying high in the sky.
"Looks like our dad's are finally back. And they noticed him. Think they'll try to test him?" my father asked the new grandmother's.
His mother responded "Psh, they better."
Dalmas mother responded "I would expect so, but hopefully not to roughly. He is, after all, only on his first solo flight."
"Hmm" was all my father said in response.
My POV
I felt so free, with the wind beneath my wings. I didn't have a care in the world. "Freedom!" I spoke my first word. A second later, I felt extreme danger. Something was hunting me.
I looked around for anything that could be a threat. I noticed a wyvern headed my way. it was roughly triple my size. What I didn't notice was the 2 dragons just around the mountain near me, watching as they were preparing to put me through a test. Unfortunately, someone else beat them to it. It would now be a trial by combat, and my life would actually be on the line.
Noticing it's sneak attack plan had failed, the wyvern let out a shrill scream as it increased its speed to try to land the first attack. Neither of us noticed the 6 dragons watching me freeze, realizing I was being attacked.
Before they could take off to catch up to me as I retreated to the cave, as they fully expected me to. I looked at the wyvern with disdain "YOU DARE?!" I screamed as a plume of fire and smoke came out of my throat causing the wyvern to try to halt in its tracks and fly away.
"YOURE NOT GOING ANYWHERE!" I screamed as I flew through the flames and smoke, right onto the, now turned, back of the wyvern as I started tearing into its body. This damage wasn't great, but I was finally able to get far enough up his back to bite into his neck and start thrashing around like a dog when it gets ahold of a cat. The only thought in my mind was kill. Slowly the wyvern stopped moving.
A few moments later, the wyverns, now dead, body started falling to the ground as I released a roar of domination. Well, as much of a roar as a 1 day old dragon could. I had won my trial by combat. I had won my first fight, unharmed. I had made my first kill. And it was another intelligent creature, but he was 3 times my size. I was feeling amazing as I dived down to catch my prize and slowly, oh so slowly, carry it back to the cave.
When the cave came into my sight, I finally noticed my family standing there watching me like I grew another head. A few moments later, my grandfather's came to my flanks and escorted me the rest of the way back to the cave. 'This is going to be an interesting day' I sighed.....'Wait, I'm actually tired enough, I could just play it off as I fell asleep right after I ate...hmm, nah. Let's just get this done and over with.' I decided.
As soon as I landed, my mother came running up to me to check fir any injuries. Finding none, she was about to start yelling at me, for God's only know what. But before she could, my father's mother cleared her throat while staring strait at her, shutting her up.
My father's mother walked up to me, calmly looking me over. "You did good, kid."
I'll admit, those words made me feel proud of myself. Until my mother couldn't take it anymore "What were you doing, flying up there alone?"
"Practicing flying?" I asked her, uncertain if that was unclear
".....why didn't you come back to the cave when you were being challenged?" she asked, more clearly
"I don't know. I just knew that he had to die for daring to attack me" I stated as if it were the most normal thing in the world.
Both of my grandfather's walked past me saying "Nice first hunt" "A wyvern thrice your size, great job. Double is normally the limit" and they continued on their way into the cave.
Both my grandmother's watched them pass and stopped them by saying "This is important news, you must go inform the others of our race of the newest kings accomplishment" "Yes dear, surley you don't plan to just let this go unannounced?"
Looking like they were told they would go without dinner if they didn't, and they probably would, they just turned back around and took off, back to the sky.
After just staring at me for a few seconds without me wavering in the slightest, my mother lost all her steam. Visibly deflating she said "No more flying without someone with you!"
I looked at her, then towards the direction my grandfathers had taken off, then back at her. I looked at her for a whole second before I turned around and took off after my grandfather's. It would technically be following her new rule.
The only reason I got away was she had already turned around before she heard the beat of my wings as I took off. As she noticed me
disappearing after my grandfather's, she let out an earth shaking roar. This only enticed me to fly faster.
In only 10 minutes I had caught up with my grandfather's, landing on 1 of their heads tiredly. After getting into a position I wouldn't get thrown off, they resumed their fast speed...maybe a bit faster. They had heard the whole conversation and the roar resulting from my act of defiance. They supported my decision, clearly. But they didn't want to deal with my angry mother.
.....
This trip resulted in me meeting a small portion of the dragon race. They were all surprised to see me there, and started, quite literally, rolling on the ground, laughing after hearing why I had accompanied them. But they all looked at me in a new light after hearing what lead up to my little act of defiance.
We finally returned as the sun was setting. And none of us really wanted to return knowing what was to come.
We landed gently on the plateau outside the cave entrance, half expecting a very ferocious mother to come storming out. We only got more nervous when my father landed right behind us looking like he was in the same boat. He obviously took off so he wouldn't have to deal with his own wife.
"We're fucked" was all I said as all 3 of them busted out laughing. But it was a very nervous laugh. They knew I was right.
"Let's just get thus over with" 1 of my grandfather's said.
"Yeah, it will only get worse the longer we take" the other 1 said
"Yes. Maybe the boy will get most of the attention, sparing us from the usual speeches" my father said, sounding hopeful
"Oh fuck you guys, I just followed my mother's new rule. Nobody said I wasn't allowed to leave with my grandfather's. Dad, you're the 1 that could have joined us,saying it was to keep am eye on me, but instead you decided to take off on your own" I said bluntly
Looking like he was looking into the pit of hell that was the cave, he realized I was right. "Shit" was all he could say as we walked into the cave for what may be my last time in awhile.
.....
It wasn't that bad. They had pretty much run out of steam by the time we came back. We were all still in trouble, but my mother did have to admit that I didn't break her new rule. Score for me, I made a female admit she was wrong.
Time slowly went by as I grew larger, stronger, and even started to learn magic.
I had gained some of my old memories during the first year of my rebirth. Just memories of a bunch of different books I had read. At first I didn't think these would be helpful, but some of them had explained different ideas on magic and how to use it. I was able to do things with magic no one had ever seen before.
On the day I turned 1, I had already learned everything a dragon needed to learn by the time they were 10. This officially/unofficially made me an adult to the dragon race.
It was finally time I received my name. No more "young one" and "little one" for me.
