Liu Zhenhan's collection of cheerful songs, even the few serious ones, were all easily recognizable in their intentions just from the lyrics.
Take for example the song "Fifteen Moons," it stirred up a surge of emotions in Liu Zhenhan every time he heard it. The lyrics inspired an urge to protect his country and his loved ones. How could the Bimon War Song, with its obtuse and complicated lyrics, possibly express such sentiment?
Could magical beasts possibly understand what I'm thinking? Liu Zhenhan was absolutely skeptic. He didn't even know what he himself was thinking all day long, how could he expect a magical beast to understand him?
Yet, his assumptions were challenged when little vixen Helen sang the Spirit Communication Battle Song and conjured an osprey right before his eyes. The result swayed Liu Zhenhan's initial indifference.
Despite Helen's declaration that the osprey was just a low-level magical pet that can only spit acidic fluids and that it wasn't as powerful as his pet Guoguo, Liu Zhenhan was intrigued.
When it came to the unusual hand gestures Helen made when she was chanting the Battle song, Liu Zhenhan initially thought there were some secret tricks to it and persistently asked Helen about them. But she explained that those were just habits she picked up when chanting the war songs and were not necessary.
Despite his lack of confidence in his own abilities, Liu Zhenhan still had the impulse to try. Having seen the tremendous power of the blue wolf, he felt that having an extra helper would certainly be beneficial.
Liu Zhenhan thought he'd give it a shot summoning a water jet rabbit, which tends to be less harmful. If the Battle Song were ineffective and the beast responded aggressively, then he'd only need to take on a water jet rabbit. The idea, however, was strongly opposed by Helen who again emphasized on the serious commitment in keeping a magical pet. Both parties, the conjurer and the beast, were bound by a soul contract and were not allowed to betray one another. If he dismissed his magical pet for no reason, the War God Kampas would strip away his ability to perform sacrifices. Furthermore, due to the relationship built through the soul contract, one would feel grief tantamount to losing a family member if the magical beast died.
Helen also tried to discourage Liu Zhenhan's intention to contract with Guoguo. Although it was easy to contract bond with a magical beast one was fond of, Helen did not want "her Richard", a natural-born Soul Singer, to contract with the lowest-tier magical beast "The Beast of Misfortune".
Given the natural attraction Soul Singers have on magical beasts and their 50% success rate when trying to summon one, Helen would've wanted Richard to summon a deep-sea behemoth, had the circumstances allowed it.
Despite this, Helen had already charted a path for her Richard, whether he managed to summon a wild magical beast or accidentally ended up with an Otherworld magical beast from the Aegean continent.
There's a knack to contracting a magical pet. In the Bimon Beastmen Kingdom, some powerful families, like the Fawkes, hatched and raised powerful wild magical beasts since their infancy to meet their needs for ritual sacrifices. Although domesticated beasts were not as powerful as the wild ones, the success rate of Spirit Communication Battle Songs often improved due to their close bond. The success rate of summoning a wild beast was extremely low, with more powerful beasts being even harder to tame.
As it turns out, Helen's mother's tribe had considerable influence in the Fawkes clan and they kept a few Thunder Beasts for their use.
Seeing Helen with a happy, sweet and innocent smile, Liu Zhenhan could not bear to spoil her mood. He thought that even if he did not contract with Guoguo, their bond was like father and son anyways. No harm in not contracting, right?
Since taming a magical beast temporarily seemed impossible, Liu Zhenhan put all his energy into building a raft. He started to explore the entire island, hoping to find some trees that were suited for building a raft.
As it turns out, the island had rather complicated terrain. Liu Zhenhan realized its mystery only after he had wandered around.
Heading north for several miles and crossing a dozen or so bread bun-like hills, one would find another wonderland at the edge of the island. There was another island right next to his island, with comparable size but without any hills. The middle part of that neighbouring island was significantly lower, looking like an extinct volcano. The volcano hole was filled with lush, green vegetation. Looking down from his hill, Liu Zhenhan saw that the volcano hole was filled with bamboo. He had absolutely no idea how these wind-sensitive plants ended up on the island. He speculated that the concave form of the volcano hole probably shielded them from the fierce sea gale, thereby sparing them from being snapped off.
With this discovery, Liu Zhenhan was overjoyed, thinking "Heaven never bars one's way". Having bamboo-like plants to make a raft would certainly save him a lot of effort. Bamboo was light and not as heavy as wood, and it wasn't as hard to chop.
The unexpected discovery didn't cause Liu Zhenhan to lose his head. Just when the little fox was getting ready to swim across, Liu Zhenhan stopped her.
So far, he hadn't encountered any formidable magical beasts on the small island he was on. The most he had seen were water jet rabbits and Guoguo-like squirrels that could spout cold air, but where did the blue wolf that first attacked him come from?
Liu Zhenhan was worried that the blue wolf came from that broken island, and he couldn't be too cautious.
After measuring the distance between the two islands with his own eyes, Liu Zhenhan estimated it to be around 300 meters. After observing carefully for a whole day, he noticed that there were about 2-3 meaningful hours during high tide in the morning and afternoon where the seawater receded. After the tide went down, a stone beam connecting the two islands, much like a continental shelf, was exposed from beneath the waves.
This discovery affirmed Liu Zhenhan's guesses even more; that blue wolf definitely didn't have the strength to jump over here. It must have gotten here when the tide was low.
Officer Liu took a moment to assess his own abilities. He now had a superior curved knife, which should have no problem blocking the wind blade of the wolf. When you add the osprey of the little fox and Guoguo's strength, Liu Zhenhan estimated that he would be able to defeat the wolf if he were to encounter it again.
"Helen," called Liu Zhenhan from the hilltop, grinning as he pointed to the two islands. "What do you think these two islands look like?"
"They look like the tortoiseshell glasses that knowledgeable mages and scholars among humans love to wear," the little fox pondered and explained innocently.
"Think again."
"They also resemble..." Helen thought hard and said, "The stone dumbbells used by the brave soldiers in our Beamon training."
Liu Zhenhan thought, somewhat sadly, that there were limits to the imagination of creatures in this world. He heaved a sigh of disappointment and chuckled.
"Let's call it a day and we'll go over there to cut wood for the boat tomorrow!" Liu Zhenhan said.
