"Your resignation has not been accepted, Mel," Morgan snapped in a way that made her feel like she shouldn't even bring up the subject again. Then, without giving her a second look, he turned his back on her and walked with purpose across the shiny, sun-drenched deck, as if the matter was decisively resolved.

Melody stayed put where he had left her, feeling a little silly and very uneasy. Her fine office clothes and delicate shoes didn't look right on a boat. She took off her high heels and held them in her hand as she tried to breathe in the fresh sea air.

As she stood there barefoot, she tried to find support by pressing her now-exposed toes against the cool deck, as if it could hold her. She focused on taking deep breaths and willed herself to feel relaxed despite all the chaos.
