"Luca!" I hissed. "Where did you come from?" How I didn't notice him there, was mind-boggling.

He smiled. "I was right here." 

His smile only brought sadness to my heart.

I had to keep him away from the dangerous sights of my vicious grandmother; and to do that, we had to avoid being seen together for more than necessary.

I looked away. "What are you doing here?"

"Guarding you, of course. I'm just doing my duty."

I frowned. "It's not your duty to guard me at night. You rarely guard my room anymore."

"It's still my job." He shrugged. "So… what are we doing tonight?"

"Nothing! Go away. You'll only get in trouble because of me."

He laughed, and it echoed loudly throughout the hallway.

"Luca, shush!"
