OUR FIRST NIGHT

The floor creaked as I took a step inside the tiny hut and looked around.

The walls of the single-room hut were made of mud and stone, with a thatched roof supported by wooden beams. Near the door was a small rectangular opening in the wooden floor to reveal the hard earth below, where a small fire was already crackling in the pit, warming the interior nicely.

It was bare of any furnishings aside from a single table. Woven mattresses, various animal pelts, and a folded quilt were laid on the floor on the opposite side of the door. A curtain hung in the corner, concealing the personal belongings of the hut's owner.

"It's pretty cozy." Luca's voice sounded directly behind me, having just closed the door behind his back. He was so tall, his head almost grazed the ceiling.

I went around him and pushed the wooden window open, just a crack, to peek outside. I exhaled with relief and muttered, "They're not there anymore."
