THE UGLY REVELATION

My blood turned cold.

What was once a peaceful, nonchalant village was now turned upside down.

People were in a panic, scrambling to get out of the soldiers' way as the call to arms directive was repeatedly being called out. The soldiers tried to restore order and make the frantic villagers calm down, to little avail.

Elliot ushered me inside the inn, and we were prodded to the corner because it was quickly filling with people trying to escape the streets. Like a battering ram, Elliot towed me behind him as he pushed through the heaving bodies, up the stairs, and to the room he shared with Louis.

"Elliot! You have to get Luca!" I pleaded as he bolted the door behind us.

"The captain and Louis will be fine, Lady Lena," he said, attempting a reassuring tone. "I won't leave you. We're safe here for the moment. They'll find a way back to us."
