CHAPTER 18

“Is he not back yet?” Martha stopped beside me as I restlessly looked outside from my spot at the front door.

“Should I go looking for him?” I inquired in concern, trying to find any traces of Tavin coming back to the house. “No, stay here. It’s too dark for you to go outside…I think he needs more time,” Martha gently said and touched my arm. “Go to sleep. He will come back.”

“No, Martha,” I sighed, “I won’t be able to rest until after he comes.”

“Hmm,” she exhaled before looking up at the sky. “Tavin will have to come sooner. It seems like it is going to rain in a few minutes.”

I cast my gaze at the black sky just as a streak of thunder and lightning momentarily illuminated the area around us. I continued to look on in worry, waiting for Tavin from the moment he had chased after Reggie as soon as he registered the fact that his little brother was alive on the neighbouring Island.

This time, it was Tavin, not I, who was pleading with Reggie to take us to Malden Islands.
