Chapter 3: Foes and Friends

Raven walked into the dimly lit tavern and was greeted by the bartender, a gruff man with a scruffy beard named Bart. The bartender looked him up and down before asking, "What do you want, kid?"

Raven responded, "I was hoping to get a room for the night. I've had a long journey and I'm exhausted."

Bart snorted. "You don't look like you have any coin. I don't take pity from strays."

Just as Raven was about to turn around and leave, a group of hooligans entered the tavern. They were loud and boisterous, laughing and shouting as they stumbled to the bar. They caught sight of Raven and immediately zeroed in on him, looking for someone to pick on.

Raven's mind raced as he tried to come up with a way out of the situation. He wasn't a strong fighter and he didn't have much in the way of magical abilities, but he was quick-witted and always able to think on his feet.

As the hooligans closed in on him, Raven used a minor spell to cause a small spark to jump from his hand to one of the hooligans' drinks. The hooligan yelped in surprise and his friends erupted in laughter, thinking it was a harmless prank.

Raven used the distraction to slip away and make his way over to Kyle, the tavern worker, who was cleaning up glasses behind the bar. He whispered to him, "Kyle, I'm in a bit of a tight spot here. Can you help me out?"

Kyle nodded, understanding the situation. He quickly stepped in front of the hooligans and told them that the boy was his nephew and that he was there to help him settle into the village. The hooligans grumbled, but eventually backed off, not wanting to cause trouble with the tavern worker.

As Raven let out a sigh of relief, he noticed that a broad-shouldered mercenary had been watching the whole scene unfold. The mercenary approached him, clapping a hand on his shoulder. "You've got some quick thinking there, kid," he said. "I like that. On my last expedition, I lost some valuable men. How would you like to join my cohort? I can offer you training in basic combat techniques and you'll always have a roof over your head." From a distance the mercenary didn't look menacing, but upon closer look he could see his calloused hands and scars from previous battles. Raven knew that this man was experienced and already had his fair share of battles.

Which is why he was taken aback by the offer. He had never considered joining a mercenary group, but the idea of having a place to belong and the chance to improve his skills was tempting. He decided to think about the offer but was grateful for the mercenary's offer to pay for his room for the night as a sign of friendship.

As Raven settled into his room for the night, he couldn't help but think about all the possibilities the future held. He was still searching for answers about his past, but for now, he was just happy to have a roof over his head and some new friends to help him along the way.
