Chapter 7 – What She Brought With Her

Amechi stood frozen for a moment, his hand hovering over the door handle. The voice… it was hers. Oge.

He opened the door slowly.

There she stood in the pale light of early morning — no makeup, no smile, no pretense. Just tired eyes, swollen cheeks, and trembling hands clutching a brown envelope.

Amechi blinked in shock. "What… what are you doing here?"

"I need to talk to you," she said, her voice low but shaking. "Please."

Before he could respond, the noise had already woken the compound.

Mama Amechi, dressed in her wrapper and head tie, stepped out from the back room with her brows furrowed. "Who is banging on our door this early morning?"

Oge turned toward her. "Mama… good morning ma."

"Good for who?" Mama Amechi snapped. "What are you doing here by this time? What do you want from my son again?"

"I'm sorry ma… but I'm— I'm pregnant."

The words dropped like thunder.

Amechi's heart stopped for a moment. "Wait. What?"

"I'm pregnant," she repeated, eyes now full of water. "It's yours."

Amechi stared at her, lost. All the healing he had built up the last few weeks felt like it was cracking inside him again.

As if on cue, Mama Emma came out too, tying her head wrap tighter, sensing the tension. "Ah-ah, what's going on here?" she asked, walking up to the small gathering.

Oge turned, still holding the envelope in both hands. "Mama Emma… I'm sorry to disturb the compound, but… I came to tell Amechi the truth. I'm two weeks pregnant. He's the father."

Mama Emma gasped. "Nwannem, is this one okay? After jumping from one man to another like say na marathon, you now remember say na my brother do am?"

Amechi's body tensed. "How do you even know it's mine?"

"I've not been with anyone else… since that night," she said, handing him the envelope. "Here. I did a test. It's all there."

He took it slowly, still not fully believing what was happening. He opened the paper and stared at the result, but the letters were blurry. Not because they were unclear — but because his eyes were clouded with a sudden surge of fear, confusion, and anger.

Mama Amechi clapped her hands. "You want to tie my son down by force, abi? After stopping his future, now you want to stop his peace again?"

"Mama, please—"

"Don't 'Mama' me!" she shouted. "You think say we no know you? You carry belle now and you want to force him to stay! Where were you when he needed support? When he gave up his London dream because of you?!"

Oge turned to Amechi, tears falling now. "I didn't come to fight. I just came to tell you. You have the right to know. Whether you believe it or not… I just want to be honest."

There was silence. The kind that makes your skin crawl.

Even the compound had gone quiet. Some neighbors were peeking through their windows. A few stood far off, pretending to fetch water but clearly listening.

Amechi finally spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. "Why now, Oge?"

"I found out three days ago," she said. "I didn't even want to come. I was scared. But my conscience wouldn't let me rest."

Mama Emma scoffed. "Your conscience should have spoken when you stopped him from traveling!"

Oge looked down. "I know I ruined things. But I didn't fake this. I just… I didn't want to keep secrets."

Amechi's head was spinning. He turned and walked back inside, still holding the envelope. "I need to think," he said quietly.

But before the door could close, Mama Amechi pulled him aside. "Nna, shine your eyes oh! This one you just recovered small, don't let this girl drag you back into darkness."

He nodded slowly, not answering.

Inside, he sat on his bed and stared at the test paper again.

Positive.

He thought of that night — the night everything had fallen apart. The pain. The begging. The knife. The fear.

Could this be real?

His hands dropped to his sides.

> "God, is this the next chapter of my life… or another storm coming?"

Later that afternoon, he met Mama Emma in the backyard. She was cutting bitterleaf, but paused when she saw him.

"You don't look okay," she said.

"I'm not," he answered honestly.

"You don't have to believe her immediately," she said, voice softer now. "But if it's true… you know you must face it like a man."

Amechi nodded. "I'm not afraid to face the truth. I'm afraid of going back to that life I was trying to escape."

"She broke you," Mama Emma said. "But maybe… this is not about her anymore. Maybe it's about the child."

He said nothing.

Just stood there, as the wind carried the smell of bitterleaf and dust across the compound.

That night, Amechi didn't sleep.

He sat at the edge of his bed, staring at the pregnancy result, wondering if life was trying to break him twice… or force him to grow.

He picked up his journal and wrote:

> "This life is not balance. I walked away to heal. I stayed away to breathe. But now… a new life may be depending on me. If it's true — then I must rise. Not for her. Not even for me. But for the innocent one that didn't ask to be born into my chaos."

He closed the book and let his head fall back against the wall.

Somewhere deep inside… he knew tomorrow would not be ordinary.

Because what Oge brought wit

h her wasn't just pregnancy news.

She brought a test.

Not of blood…

…but of character
