Chapter 30: And the Heart Grows Fonder

“Mom!” Tom yells from the far side of the battlefield. Jenna’s head jerks at the sound of his voice, a panicked look on her face.

“Thomas!” she calls out to him. Tom races to us and meets his mother in a tight embrace, but they don’t have much time for a heartfelt reunion.

“I’m so glad you’re okay,” Jenna sobs into her son’s hair.

“I’m okay, I swear, but we have to move. Now! Nicolas could be here at any second, and he’s not alone!”

Jenna frowns. “What do you mean?”

Tom shakes his head. “There is someone with him. A witch. A very powerful, very angry witch. Look, I don’t have time to explain, but we have to leave RIGHT NOW!”

Tom takes both of our hands and tries to pull us away from the fighting, but a familiar voice makes me pull back.

I glance over my shoulder and see Devon firing a gun at a charging wolf, teeth snapping in the wind.

Before Tom or Jenna can say anything, I’ve shifted again and barrel toward the charging wolf.
