Chapter 30: I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.

“Arrête!”

Aidan stops mid-plié, hands going to rest on his bare hips as he exhales exasperatedly.

The stage lights above him are blindingly bright, making it impossible for him to make out the audition panel sat at a table a few rows back from the stage. He cannot really even recall their faces from having passed them on his way up. So, at the moment they are only quite judgemental disembodied voices.

“Monsieur Wynne, in your correspondence you promised us one of, if not the best dancer we have ever seen,” a man with a breathy, slightly musical voice admonishes, “but if you merely meant a brilliantly technical dancer, then we all feel sorely misled.”

“You are brilliant. I have never seen such mastery of the craft,” a woman with a voice like molten chocolate intones. “However, all our dancers are brilliant. Perhaps not on your level, but brilliant nonetheless.”
