James had lost count at this point of how many times he felt out of place around the rich. Leaning against one of the walls, James watched as people effortlessly conversed and caught up with each other.
Shifting from one leg to the other, he scanned the crowd once more for the man he was hoping to see, and finally, after what seemed like hours—when in reality it was only a few minutes—he saw him.
Edwin was talking to a few other women at the party, and James watched as he complimented their outfits and hair and how they did the same. He watched as Edwin smiled and his heart skipped a beat, his feet moving forwards toward the other man.
But then he hesitated, What if Edwin didn’t want to see him? He felt his mother’s necklace grow heavy and try to pull him toward Edwin, but he got nervous again and he turned away. What if that note was right? What if he was going to hurt Edwin? What if he had to kill him?
