Chapter 6 - Adapting to a new world

On the way home, he searched for who this mysterious benefactor was. From that nurse's reaction, that guy seemed to be somewhat famous.

As soon as he typed out that guy's name in his antique mobile phone, a few hundred results popped up. The first thing was a blown-up picture. A handsome black-haired man was peering right back at him through the screen.

For a second, Yunfeng felt his heart stop.

'He…'

The man's eyes were slightly upturned with enchanting, deep brown pupils. Added to this enchanting sight were his lips. The man was biting his lower lip with a playful look on his face.

'He's too handsome!'

Yunfeng closed the tab instantly.

He had seen a fair share of handsome men. Even a few alphas chasing after him were considered handsome in their time, but none of them could beat this guy's face. Not even in a thousand years!

That too, Alphas were known for their exceptional looks, but he had never seen a man as handsome as this Ren Muchen. He had a feminine yet masculine face. His chin was squared and had a very strong jawline, but his eyes were soft. Yet, in that picture, he actually saw a wild feeling in those brown pupils.

Not to mention that guy's lips.

They looked delectable.

He wanted to take a bite.

Yunfeng immediately shook his head. 'I can't think of my benefactor like that.' He took a deep breath and calmed his racing heart.

Hana, beside him, gave him a weird look. "Mum, I think he is seeing some R-rated content," she whispered to her mother in secret.

His mum gave him a look. "You're too young to be looking at stuff like that."

"Stuff like what?" he asked, confusedly gazing at them both.

His mum gave him a disappointed glare. "You know what you're looking at."

His eyes widened ever so slightly. He had to admit he felt shaken when he saw that guy's face and felt a weird sense of heat. But he did not have any bad intentions.

"See, he is guilty."

"Enough, stop bothering him."

Pouting, she gave him a look. "I have my eyes on you."

Yunfeng ignored her childish action and secretly gazed at his old phone again. This model of phone had boomed back in style in the 30th century but went out of style right after that. 'Can't believe that this existed in the 21st century….'

His gaze fell out the window at the outside world. The buildings of this time were all small. The highest building he spotted on the way was about fifty stories tall. But in his time, they had a lot of hundred-story buildings in every corner of the city. Only the privileged like his and Jai's family were actually capable of living in private mansions.

That too, they owned a huge mansion in the middle of the city. Which was a huge feat in his time.

That was also the reason why many alphas always followed behind him. They came after his riches. His face contributed to this too. But the major reason some followed him was for his fortune.

After all, he was the first-born son of the Lin family. His father had already planned well for him to inherit the business. His sister got a fifty percent stake in all the business. His parents prepared everything for them.

Yunfeng gazed at his mother, who was silently gazing out the window. Even in this impoverished life, his mother was working hard to help her children live a comfortable life. Thinking of all the sacrifices she had done for them to have a happy life, he started to tear up.

'Shit… I never cry, and now look at me.'

'I guess dying once did this to me,' he wiped his unshed tears swiftly and cheerfully gazed out. 'Right now, I have to think of ways to improve our living. This whole world is underdeveloped. If I can bring out any technology from my past life, I can make a ton of money. But the only problem is, I don't have any knowledge of how any of them were created.'

His eyebrows twitched.

'Gosh, I feel useless.'

They reached home sooner than he had expected. He directly went to his room to search for potential part-time jobs he could take up.

The moment he opened his phone, the enchanting photo came up.

He dropped the phone in a panic.

Yunfeng hurriedly picked it up and closed the browser. Only then did his heart rate go down a notch. "What the fuck is happening? Am I sick or something?" he patted his chest.

After a few minutes, he was able to regain his calm.

Then he started to search for part-time jobs close by.

He found a tutor listing on the app. It was close to his school. He could go there right after his classes. And the pay was good too.

Yunfeng sent in his application. But the person who listed the request wanted him to send his school results or his educational qualifications.

He searched around the room to find a few of his result papers. But most of them did not look good.

Yunfeng of this world did not seem to be good at studies. Just as he was.

The only thing he could do well was math, but Yunfeng of this world seemed to fail miserably at that too.

Yunfeng sighed. "I guess I can try to find work in a café like my sister."

Cafés were still famous in the 35th century. But they were mostly high-class and posh compared to the ones he saw on the way here. He was pretty sure they would hire him just by looking at his face.

'But before that, I need to do a bit of work on my appearance.'

Grinning, Yunfeng found a pair of scissors and started to give himself a haircut.

The next morning, Hana ran up the stairs to wake up her dumb brother. But this time, she planned to do it gently because he was already hurt. "You dumbo, wake up!" she threw open the door and stomped in.

A big lump of the blanket was all she could see.

She jumped on the bed and pulled the blanket off his face.

Hana froze, seeing a handsome face laying on the soft pillow. His short, wispy hair was spread out on the white pillow, creating a beautiful halo.

"God darn…."

Her loud exclaim woke him up.

Yunfeng gazed at her with a dull gaze. He pushed her off him and rushed off to the bathroom to clean up.

In ten minutes, he got ready and was down in the kitchen. They did not own a cooking robot, so his mother had to do most of the work. As the man of the house, he needed to pull his own weight in the household.

His mother was busying around in the kitchen, making seaweed wraps.

Wordlessly, he started to shred the vegetables that went into the wrap.

His mum gave him a look, but with a small smile, she continued to sort out their breakfast and packed their lunch.

She handed his bag to him and patted his back. "I've got it from here. Go and eat your breakfast."

Yunfeng shook his head. "Mum, where do you work?"

He had heard a vague discussion about a food stall, but after that, his sister and mum never talked about their source of income. He had to know how much they were earning to compensate for the deficit amount.

His mum cast a bright smile on her face, revealing a bit of her smile lines and fine wrinkles around her eyes. "At our restaurant. Bring Jai over next time. That good boy has really been a good influence on you."

The same dialogues as his last life.

Yunfeng rolled his eyes with a small smile. "Yeah, sure."

He ate his breakfast and walked out with his sister alongside. But today, he had to bring along a huge bag full of stuff on his back. He had never had to carry such a heavy thing on his back before.

Frowning, he walked slowly uphill behind his sister.

"Why is this so heavy? Did you sneak in some rocks in it?"

Hana gave him a weird look again. "I wish I had. Thanks for the wonderful idea."

Panting, Yunfeng caught up to her and stood at the familiar crossroad. This time, Hana grabbed hold of his hand and held him across the road.

"I'm not a child. I can cross the road well on my own."

The road rules were still the same in that world as well, but only the vehicles were different. In the 35th century, they had successfully developed flying cars that were ecologically sustainable. The mode of transport was airways.

Only a crazy person like himself would consider walking around by foot.

Yunfeng had always enjoyed taking a walk rather than flying in his flashy cars. It gave him a grounded feeling.

'But this is too much.' He panted loudly as he jostled the heavy bag on his back. "How do you do it?"

Hana pulled the bag off his back and wore it on her front. "You're such a weak chicken."

Yunfeng did not refute. His new body was super weak.

'I need to work out and develop the muscles I had in my last life.'

Reaching his school, he was directly greeted by Jai, who was waiting right outside their class.

Jai looked at him like he was looking at an alien.

Head tilted, Yunfeng gazed at him. "What is with you?"

"You…. Are you the same Yunfeng I know?"

This made Yunfeng freeze in his step. He quickly regained his composure as he continued on to the classroom as if nothing happened. "I am."

"What is…." Jai removed his glasses, wiped them, and put them on again to get a good look. "You look different."

"Oh, is it good?" He ran his fingers through his hair. He had cut it shorter in the front so that it did not hide his elegant eyebrows. His family did not have cash to get a proper haircut, so he did it himself for the first time.

It looked good to him, but he did not know how others would see it.

Jai nodded. "It's good, a bit choppy in the back," he grimaced, looking at the back.

Yunfeng gasped. "Is it that bad? Fix it for me." He took out the scissors from his bag.

"You came hella prepared." Jai sighed and took the scissors. "I'll give you a cut later. Now I have to ask you something very important," he pushed him down into his seat.

Yunfeng sat in the same uncomfortable chair with a grimace. "What?"

"Explain this," he held out a small sheet of paper.

Yunfeng gazed at it. "It's paper. Made of wood."

Jai hid his head in his hands.

"Ow, what was that for?"

"How did you get this much on your mock test?" he scooted closer, dragging his chair with him. "Yun… did you cheat? Everyone in the class is talking about it."

Yunfeng read out his marks. He had gotten a perfect 100 in his mock test. "Even a third-grade student can do those sums."

As soon as he said this, the whole class glared back at him.

"What? I'm telling the truth."

One of the men sitting in the front walked up to him. He was a tall kid, standing at six feet with a muscular build. He glared down at him with a fierce look. "I bet you cheated. You could barely pass last time, and now you got a perfect score? Who will believe that?"

Yunfeng frowned deeply. "I'm sorry that your bulky, fold-less brain could not comprehend the questions on the test. But my brilliant brain can do third-grade math so easily."

The boy growled, slamming his fist on the table. "I'll report you! We'll see if you can write this test or not!"

"Go, report. I can take the test again right in front of them if they want me to. I don't have to be scared of you." He leaned back and gave him a challenging glare.

"What is going on here?" the familiar teacher from yesterday entered the class. "Why are you not in your seat, Fu Lee?"

The bulky boy backed away and sat down in his seat. Occasionally, he glanced back with a glare.

Yunfeng just gave him a middle finger.

"Yunfeng," the teacher gestured for him to stand up. "There have been many reports about the authenticity of your test results. Do you have anything to say to that?"

"I passed the test fair and square. Is it not okay for a person to improve himself? I studied and did well on the test. Some people are jealous of my improvement and want to push me down. Teacher, I can't believe you would not side with me on this. So disappointed."

The teacher looked baffled by his words. "I… I didn't mean it like that, Yunfeng. It's just you have not been improving a lot this year, so…"

"So? You don't believe me. Do you want me to take that test again? Right in front of your eyes. I can do that, but if I do, that person who complained against me must apologize to me," he glared at the bulky guy.

"There is no need for that. Calm down, everyone," the teacher appeased the students. "Right now, we do not have any proof to doubt Yunfeng regarding his test results. Whether he is genuinely studying or if he is doing something crafty, we will come to know in our next exam. Until then, everyone, please do not speculate things and spread any bad rumors."

Yunfeng sat down with a pout. He was prepared to fight to prove his mathematic skills, but the teacher poured water over his plan.

"Quiet down, everyone. Turn to page 50. We will be continuing on with the matrix."

The class was very dull. The math problems taught by the teacher were something he was well familiar with. He lost all interest in taking notes and simply fell asleep.

The next few classes were horrific, though.

Yunfeng was good with mathematics, but the science and other subjects… he was lacking too much. He was barely able to keep up with what was being taught.

Sweating, he gazed at Jai. "Will they include this in our entrance exam?"

"Duh, we have all subjects in our exams," he said without lifting his head out of his books.

Yunfeng gulped loudly. "S-so when is the exam exactly?"

"One month from now. It was supposed to be in March, but they preponed it due to elections."

Yunfeng felt his world crash down on his shoulders. One month… he only had one month to brush up on all of the subjects. "Fuck…."

His plans to take up part-time jobs came to a screeching halt.
