Dying is so easy

DAMON'S POV

I glared at Conrad even as he paced back and forth in the throne room ever since I had banned him for attempting to linger around the courtyard where we had hoped the Magik will not be able to resist coming in and playing hero. It was a great risk we had taken and Kira had been aware of the risk so I will really appreciate it if he stopped hyperventilating while we waited for his right-hand man who he had sent immediately we found out that the Magik as expected had intervened to find out if she was among the dead bodies that the Magik had been too late to save.

"For the record," I said under my breath irritated. "We could always get another human girl if she turns out dead."

He turned to look at me. "You know I will really like it if I am not reminded you don't have a soul."

"And I would have liked it if you are not walking to and fro the royal room because of a human but it seems like we all can't have what we want." I replied back.

"I don't want to think of her dead," he whispered and I rolled my eyes. He had made that much clear when he had tried changing her mind in the morning.

"She had made her decision."

"You made her a hard bargain. Her brother's comfort for her life."

I chuckled. "Humans." I shook my head. "It was almost too easy."

He regarded me with disgust. A look that I was now conversant with and didn't perturb me one bit. It was no secret my brother wasn't my biggest cheerleader and being with humans had made him go soft.

But as we waited my mind couldn't help but go back to last night after her brother had returned back to his foster parents who were peasant farmers and she had asked to see me.

"I will do it," she had mumbled the minute I entered her room. Her back was facing me and her voice was cold almost like she couldn't believe it herself.

I couldn't even pretend to be stunned. All humans had a price.

"What do you want?"

"My brother." She turned to look at me and although I had given myself enough pep talk on all the reason why I shouldn't want her, her alarming beauty that was now highlighted with a kind of grief apparent on her face was hard not to be noticed.

It was crazy that although her face was bare and she was still dressed in her rags, she made me feel things no woman can brag about including Evangeline. She made me feel out of control, made my cock twitch and tempted me to touch myself to the thought of her fuller bottom lip that she has a habit of biting into that drives me crazy.

"I want him to be with me when this is all over. I want you to guarantee his safety, I want you to assure me he will never lack and he will always be happy."

"I can't ensure your brother's happiness but I can give him everything in the world," I replied to her a bit taken aback by her request. She didn't want anything for herself. Even though she was in no position to bargain, I wouldn't have mind sparing a land or two for her and giving her some coins.

"Yeah, I forgot," she said grimly standing up from the bed ad moving to the curtains that were drawn and opened them. 'You can't give what you don't have."

She was baiting me but unfortunately for her I had no need to defend how happy I was or not. Especially since I didn't believe in happiness, it was an illusion, a stupid word that only humans could come up with. My kind can never be happy, a Prince should always want more and should chase more with a hunger out of this world.

"That will be all," she mumbled turning to look at me without moving her shoulder.

I nodded and turned to leave.

'You don't have anything to say." She whispered when I gripped the door knob.

I stopped. "I do. You just won't like it."

"That has never stopped you before." Sher voice was distant at this point.

"I think it is very human of you to risk dying for a brother you just met yesterday." I replied. "And for me foolish is synonym to human."

Her laugh was hoarse and flat yet I had to steel myself so I wouldn't turn and take a peek. "If something happens to me, will it be too much to ask that you take care of him regardless?"

"Yes," I turned the knob. "You can die for your brother but can you live for him? That's harder so do that. Live and take care of him yourself." Then I walked out not turning back, not caring that she was aware of how stupid her decision was yet she was going to do it anyway.
