It's still daytime, the story hasn't fully unfolded yet. It shouldn't be met with an attack but since this is a world of the supernatural, who can say for sure.
Chen was hesitating whether he should investigate when he heard a creaking sound from the door, followed by a white silhouette in the darkness.
Chen was taken aback and upon closer inspection, saw a man in his fifties of medium build wearing a big mask and holding a flashlight, appearing out of nowhere at the gate.
It must be John, the guardian of the morgue, who could come and go as he pleased. No wonder he wasn't seen in the duty room. He had actually sneaked into the morgue and was up to something in the dark.
Although Chen suspected it was John, he didn't approach immediately. He looked down to the ground and saw John's long, dark shadow under the flame of the lamp. It was not 'that kind of thing'.
"John, it's me, Zhao Heping. The dean asked me to look for you," Chen said, slightly relieved.
"The dean? What for?" John took off his mask, his expression wooden.
Is this guy really stupid or is he pretending?
"What else could it be? Of course, it's the incident of the missing corpse last night," Chen said, with a puzzled expression, "Weren't you on duty here last night? Didn't you find any clues about what happened next door?"
While saying this, Chen was sizing up the other person. John had come to the mortuary for no apparent reason, instead of staying in the duty room, which made him look suspicious.
John's expression suddenly became hesitant as he heard Chen's words, and he let out a heavy sigh. "Dr. Zhao, it's not that I'm not reporting it, it's just that nobody would believe me if I said it. The leader has already warned me that if I keep talking randomly, I'll be fired."
Rumor-mongering?
Chen keenly caught on to this unusual description, which meant that John had indeed encountered something out of the ordinary, and could even be the key clue to the case.
"What rumor-mongering? As long as it's a clue to solving the problem, it should be put out there. John, I'm here at the behest of the Dean to investigate the situation, so don't be concerned. Just tell me what you know."
Despite the polite words, Chen could tell that John was implying that his superior was nothing compared to the Dean's authority, and that John should stop talking nonsense and just say it.
John hesitated and looked around nervously, as if afraid the corpses in the morgue might overhear them.
Once they were in the duty room, Chen poured John a glass of water and asked, "What happened last night?"
John held the glass and his expression became serious. "Doctor Chen, do you believe in the supernatural? What if I told you that a corpse resurrection?"
Chen frowned, almost imperceptibly. It seemed that the problem was indeed related to this one corpse. Curiosity crossed his face as he asked, "corpse resurrection? How so? Did you see it?"
John shook his head quickly and waved his hands, "No, no, I... I didn't have the guts!"
"Can you tell me exactly what happened?"
John bit his lips and sighed softly, "It's a long story..."John coughed twice, seeming to organise his somewhat chaotic thoughts through nervousness. "Last night I was on duty alone and prepared some snacks and wine. I had a few sips and accidentally fell asleep leaning against the chair. In the middle of the night I was suddenly woken up by the cold. When I woke up I heard a loud banging noise. I was a bit curious and got up in a daze. Suddenly I remembered that on the first floor there was only the duty room and the morgue. Since it wasn't the door to the duty room that was making the noise, it must have been..."
John swallowed his saliva, seemingly unwilling to say the word that made him uncomfortable. "But still, under the influence of alcohol, I grabbed a torch and decided to have a look. Just then I heard a creaking sound, as if something had passed my duty room.
"What was it? Did you see it?" Chen interrupted.
"See it? I was so scared at the time that I didn't dare look. You know what the next room is. Could something good come out of it?"
"Then what?"
"Then... then I didn't know anything anymore."
"You didn't know anything?"
John's face also showed a hint of confusion. "I was so scared at that moment, but I don't know why I fell asleep. When I woke up, it was already dawn. I dared to go to the morgue. But to my surprise, the morgue door was still locked and there was no sign of it being opened!
"Doctor Zhao, do you think our hospital is really... haunted?"
John's eyes looked at Chen again, as if they contained some hidden meaning, but it was hard to make out.
"What nonsense are you talking about!" Chen interrupted John immediately. "Your experience sounds very mysterious."
"That's right, I said it when I came to ask about it in the morning, but they didn't believe me, they even accused me of slandering and not talking nonsense. Hmph, I've been working in the hospital for so many years, when did I slander. "
John's angry expression made Chen couldn't help but laugh. No wonder he had an unhappy expression when he first came to ask about the situation.
Now that he had a general understanding of the situation, Chen didn't want to stay here any longer, and was about to get up and leave. Suddenly, an image flashed through his mind, it was John holding a flashlight, standing in the morgue.
"By the way, there's one more thing."
Chen looked at John and showed a thoughtful expression.
"What were you doing in the morgue just now?"
In an instant, a strange expression flashed across John's face, although it quickly recovered its wooden expression, but this expression did not escape Chen's eyes.
"Nothing, just work, I went in to take a look."
The morgue was filled with patients who had just died in the hospital. Chen didn't think this was a reason to stand up.
The timid John suddenly wasn't so funny anymore.
Just now, he even had a feeling that John's true character was not what he showed in front of him. So why did he hide or "act" in front of him?
An incredible thought suddenly jumped out of Chen's mind...
Can a veteran employee who has been in the morgue for decades go in and search for investigation without any reason?
No.
There was only one kind of person who would do this.
Chen raised his head and looked at John in front of him firmly. "The last question."
"Do you know anything else about this Zhao Heping?"
Although Chen had taken off his work card, it was impossible for him not to know his job and related information, just because of his relationship as an introduced in the hospital.
But at this time, something strange happened. The John in front of him did not answer the question. His face gradually became solemn, and there was no wooden expression as before.

"No answer? I can basically be sure then."
Chen looked at the other person and slowly opened his mouth, one word at a time.
"So you are also one of the participants in this story."
